The system sounds like a good idea, but I think it needs work. In particular, when islands come pre-marked, the player is left to assume there's a pre-defined meaning (but I don't think there is).
I assume this can get really confusing with multiplayer.
I can't add or remove markers. All I can do is turn them on/off in the legend, which kind of highlights islands that have those markers, but if they are automatically added, then the legend could really do with some tooltips.
However, I would say the circle with the smaller circle and dot is a learning stone, while the spiral in the dripping circle is an atlas drop.
Just weird that I've used learning stones and picked up atlas' from other islands that still show as a dot, which I prefer.

The islands showing a marker instead of the normal dot are "Atlas" islands -- using a Lost Atlas at the table-map will lead you here. They are marked by a yellow beacon that you can't build.
