Custom island habitat
I tried using about 3 different custom islands as home islands and each of them is giving the "missing habitat" message when releasing birds or frogs. (The correct items for them have already been built as well)

On top of that each custom island seems to show 0/0 on all animals/trees etc as well. Can custom islands simply not be used for keeping up a proper ecosystem?

For frogs I've had luck with them in the pond Vivarium.

I've not gotten anything to work reliably for birds.

What I've found is that your island matches the biome you got it from. Only the animals that are native to that biome can be released on your island. Each animal also needs a "mini" biome that it likes. The frog a pond. A bird a tree. The lizard seems to do just fine on the ground, but not the frog. Insects are fine to release.

You can not place a vivarium for the frog (there are 3 types of pond, one for each biome) except the one that is for the current biome you are in. Biome is based on the island and that includes your island base.

So how to play the game? I just keep the creatures native to my island base out in the open. Those not native, I keep in storage boxes.

Luckily the ones you can't put in storage boxes, like the llama, sheep, and goats are happy in any biome. Each creature has the biome(s) they like. Some just one, some two, some all three.

Sound confusing? It is.

I should have updated this a while ago I suppose. What the game does not really clearly tell you is that with custom islands you don't want to spawn them via the menu, but instead you want to add them to a new save.

When done that way, you go explore and find the custom island you added and that specific island does in fact have a working eco system as it should. (Why the spawned versions do no, I have zero clue)

So for the Humble Falls custom island found in the steam workshop it says this:
"How to see the world in current game:
1. When in game press tab, click on last icon in your menu 'Home islands'.
2. Despawn your own current home island, it wil not be deleted dont worry! wait until your island is gone.
3. Click Home islands menu again, --> custom islands --> Humble Falls (workshop).
4. Place the air ball somewhere, where is enough space in the open world.
5. Humble Falls is now spawned in the world and is also considered a home island for you. Until you despawn it.

How to add world to new save game:
click create new world, --> Settings, --> Custom islands --> select Humble Falls --> press confirm.
it will now Randomly spawn somewhere in your new game as an island that you can encounter."

So the mod description describes two methods to use the custom island. You are saying the first method will result in the eco system not working? Only use the 2nd method? Seems like a pain, as you have to find the island. Where does it even appear?

I used the first method. For sheep, goats, and llama, it seems to work fine. They don't breed though, but I've never seen them do that. Doesn't work for lizards though I think. Those do normally multiple and so do butterflys, but they did not on my island.

I don't see this as a huge problem, but certainly would be better if both methods gave the same result. I only used the first method because I had no idea where I've find the island using the 2nd method.

When spawning the custom islands in the first way, take a look at all the stats on the field guide. It will say 0/0 for everything as well as show none fo the creatures actually on the island in the guide itself. While you can add various creatures and critters they will not settle on the island and they will not spawn and they will not show up on the field guide. So basically the eco system is broken. This shows like this for example on skull island from the workshop when spawned:

Now if you add the island to a new save as a custom island, you need to manually look for it. It will spawn in the world in the biome type area it belongs to. (So if its an emerald Isles based island, it will most likely be in the first 3 starter blocks on the map)

After you find it in its proper spawned by the game version, it looks like any other island. with trees, plants and animals all showing numbers as well as actually showing which animals and critters are currently on the eco system. And lizards, butterflies etc will properly spawn as well when placed in the ecosystem as any other normal island.

Basically, they need to fix this.

Ok, thanks for the answer. Yes, I agree, they need to fix it.

When I add an island from the workshop, I want to be able to access it in the game immediately, not have to search for it, which could take hours, even days to find it.

I added I think 5 workshop custom islands. I did find one of them. Coincidentally the one I'd been using, the "long vehicle". I worked on moving my stuff to it and did see that the ecosystem is now working as intended, where it shows the critters that are needed and that are on the island. The butterflies are fluttering around. Looks so much better than when the ecosystem is broken.

Functioning ecosystems are absolutely stunning when brimming with life with all the critters floating around and hearing the sounds from all over with the birds and the fireflies :)

(Oh, btw forgot one thing, the first biome type is also used on the most leftward tile when you go to the last island groups after you get the linnin sails. So your custom islands can also spawn there if the are the green type.)

habitats are for specific animals, there are terrariums for each biom though

Yes, but unfortunately, you can only place the terrarium for a specific biome in that same biome. Be nice to be able to have terrariums for all 3 biomes on your home island.

You are able to use the vivariums for deco to show the other critters, but those just don't let them spawn sadly :(

I did experiment with making a custom island with all 3 biome types at the same type, but while visually this works, it still can only be saved as either biome 1,2 or 3.. So it still only counts as whatever biome you set it as sadly..

Maybe save 3 copies of it. Call the XXX Fallen Heights, etc. I wish all the ones in the Steam Workshop would do that. I'd get 2 or 3 copies each with a different biome of some of the really goods ones there. My favorite is still the Long Vehicle, but it is only for the first biome.
