Farming plot
I have all those crops, like tomato and wheat, but they need to be planted in a farming plot. Yet I don't know the recipe. How do I obtain those? Just by flying to islands in the hopes one has those and then use the sketchbook to get the recipe, or is there another way?
I saw a youtube vid from last year where someone used a hoe and then got the recipes, but this doesn't work for me. I reckon a lot has changed since then. I only started playing yesterday.

Yes, the game has changed in quite a few ways. I played the last demo and learnt everything, but have only played this latest version for a couple of days myself. If you get lucky you can find a knowledge stone to teach you the recipe or sketch one. Paper is pretty hard to come by though, so save it for important things like the farm plots or whatever you really need.

There's a tool called a Stone Dorkip that can be used as a spear or a hoe on Farming Plots and on ordinary ground to collect Soil. Maybe that replaced the actual hoe, I can't remember.

SPOILER:-If really desperate, create a new world and play that, even if only temporarily, before going back to your main world. Your character, their inventory and the recipes they have learnt transfer over. Since you already know some recipes, the stones you henceforth encounter will contain recipes you haven't already learnt. I couldn't find a Campfire recipe to cook food, and used this to get the recipe in the first stone I encountered.

Yeah the island I designated to be my base happened to have a camp fire. Because I didn't know the sketchbook required all those pieces of paper I had found, I just started sketching everything I could find, like tables and hanging lamps and other useless stuff and now I don't have paper anymore.
I had read about the way to just load a new world to get these resources again. That was a good tip. I have some other games that work like that too, like Solace Crafting.
So there isn't a recipe for making paper?

Yes, you can go back and forth to any of the worlds you create and upon returning to your main world everything will be as you left it. You won't lose anything. There's no paper recipe at present, but I recall the devs saying they know about the paper shortage and hopefully they will increase the drops.

The sketching mechanic is a great idea but the lack of paper is a huge problem. Since this is a demo and the balance is rather broken I didn't mind using cheats. If you press F1 to open the console you can give yourself paper with the "give paper 10" command.

Oh, thanks! Saves creating a new world every two or 3 islands. 🙂

The Farming Plot needs soil, I believe. The soil is made in the decomposer, but little sticks tell of decomposing wood to get soil, though the decomposer, when built, has slots of vegetables I haven't seen so far instead of the wood. Changing stuff around is not unusual for developing games, but this undocumented mess is extremely frustrating,

On one of the large islands, you find a garden set up on a hill -- very easy to spot from the air. There is a "Dorkip" gardening tool you can use the sketchbook to learn the recipe for (and there may be another way to learn it using the crafting slots where you add materials to learn). The dorkip will let you harvest soil by simply clicking on the ground - click once and move to harvest more, or it will just put the dirt back on the same spot. And you can use it to make dirt pathways or bare spots on your island by removing soil. :steamhappy:

You can make make soil out of manure. You can find manure where ever you find animals, like sheep and goats. There is also an island that may have an outhouse and in the holes there is manure.

Good suggestion, I didnt have the same issues as OP but I found additional benefits from following the tip.

Saved me having to backtrack all the way back to the starting area, to copy blueprints when I didnt have paper, and I learnt new recipes from the lesson stones.

I’m not sure if things respawn differently, but I just found a knowledge stone which was the rustic farming plot blueprint on the main island that you start on. It’s below a waterfall and in a cave behind it.

Actually there is a recipe for it... you have to learn how to make "paper pulp", and its like 3-4 paper pulps to make a piece of paper. You learn it.. surprisingly late? Funny thing is I know it, but never use it... I just religiously grab every scrap I can find, all the time; its often hidden in the grass and in out-of-the-way places....

There isnt enough... and they will add more... if you think its bad for you, then imagine what its like when there are multiple people playing and living under this same limit. Still, I think that every item you sketch is one you WONT have to get by knowledge stone, which means its more likely you will get the good things from them sooner. Best not to hoard paper, IMO

I did once find an island with just TONs of new stuff to copy, and did not hesitate to "give" myself some new paper... I felt it would be a pain to go back home and make that much "paper pulp".....
