No interaction. You can find your island and figure out which way it's pointed (if you have good eyes that can see that small). That's it. I don't remember whether you can tell infected islands from clean ones, but I don't think so.

That cant be right. Here is a picture of "no interaction"... https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3260083673

This is supposed to be useful? This is intuitive? This cant really be it can it?? It doesn't seem like much but I got to this point in the game and it completely turned me off. Kinda feeling like I wasted my time up to this point. "All over a map?" Yup. If its useless take it out of of the game. A map is supposed to be useful. This one is not.

This map is very much still WIP. Since the last update, we've implemented the actual interactions with it (Zoom, move, tag, filter, etc), these changes will be there on the next update ^^ For now, the workaround is to use the spyglass as a tool to zoom in and look at the map (even though it's not ideal), but being in 1st person also helps

Apologies for any inconvenience, this is still pre-alpha so you might encounter incomplete features or some bugs! Do let us know if anything else if giving you a hard time

Yeah I found a solution another post.... its like the Sea of Thieves map at the moment. You need a spy glass for it, lol! Now that I understand what i am looking it... this is a large map!

The map only shows the sectors you've been to so far, so it's mostly empty at the start of the game. Plus I think it's only meant to be used in first person. In the picture it looks like you're playing third person, so you're looking at it from 20 ft. away when you meant to be a lot closer. When I first started playing the game there was no map; all you had to go by was flashing lights in the distance. It's a lot easier with the map.

So I guess I need full access all the way around it to use it... right? I cant just shove it in a corner unless I walk on it I suppose.... but walking on tables is bad manners.

I actually love the map. It took me a while to get my head around it, and I still find it very small and hard to read, but I love the way it's a real map, not a gameified meta one using UI -it makes it way more immersive.
The spy glass was a good suggestion, I've been standing on the table and crouching to read it! It helped putting a couple of lamps stacked on the centre hub so you've got better light to see it. I still find it a bit small to make out though, so I'm delighted to hear about the the improvements that are on the way.

So if you are in 1st person and you crouch by the table map you can see your ship in 3D on it LOL!

check screenshot 19 on the store page, the map table will make sense once you see that picture. From the looks of it, the map in the full version will be HUGE
The map definitely works -- no spyglass needed!

Once you do interact with it ('E' by default), you need to drag and use the mouse wheel to zoom in. Unfortunately, it zooms all the way in with one scroll "notch", so I zoom back out a notch or two.
