Starting over with a new map, somehow it keeps progress from the previous save.
I started the game and played for about half an hour, then I noticed that I misspelled the name of the map. (Yes, I misspell things a lot, probably latent dyslexia.) You can't change the name in-game, so I tried changing the file name in Windows, but that just made the game crash. So I decided to replay the first 30 min. in a new map, but then I noticed that the recipes I learned on the first playthrough were already learned. I'm not sure what is supposed to happen, is the recipe knowledge stored with the character so I'd have to create a new character to truly start over? Anyway, the knowledge stone I read in the first playthrough was still active in the second one, so it seems like there's a potential exploit there. Just create a new map, check the first knowledge stone, and repeat until all the recipes have been learned, no actual exploration necessary.

I kind of need to know what to save in a manual backup because I'm trying to do a Let's Play. You really need to be able to go back to a previous point for that because you never know when something will go horribly wrong with the recording, like forgetting to press the "record" button. In the meanwhile, I'm going to delete the map and the character and start over so see if it keeps carrying over progress from the earlier playthroughs.

Yeah, you got it. In this game, the thing you save is the Character. Your character has inventories, things they've learned, etc.. The map is just where the character happens to be right now.

Thanks. You also need to save the map though because that where your buildings etc. are. So basically I need to backup both the Saves and the Characters folder. I'm not used this two pronged save idea, but I guess it makes sense if the game is going to go multiplayer eventually.

Pesky is correct, your character saves its inventory, knowledge, etc. As for changing the name of a map in-game, will add this to our dev-to-do list, thanks for the suggestion!

If you're going to change the selection interface, can I suggest another change ?

Since a game session involves you playing a specific character on a specific map, put them both on the same screen. So on the left you select the character you want to play, and on the right you select the map they should appear on. If you haven't selected one of each the game doesn't let you proceed. This should explain to the user what's happening better than the current interface.

Ideally, they would both default to whatever you played last, but that's a minor detail.

I restarted my map also wanted to play on a bigger map and wanted the same name and noticed the same thing with my character. But could not find away to delete my character so had to create a new one with a different name. Is there away to delete characters?

There doesn't seem to be a way to do it game, but you can delete the folder in the game's save data. (The save data is in C:\Users\[[your name]\AppData\LocalLow\Astrolabe Interactive\Aloft\0.1.34) Warning: this does NOT work with map/save files. Deleting one of them will cause the game to crash. You can delete maps in-game so there's no reason to do it anyway. I've been told the devs are working on this, so stay tuned.

Thanks for the reply. I will wait for the devs to add this to the game.
