As mentioned, Octopath is much better on the combat side. There's an actual unique battle system that they put a lot of work into that allows for a lot of strategy whereas here it's just kinda "do I attack, attack with an ability that maybe does a bit more damage, heal or defend"
Octopath also just feels SO much better to play as a whole. Some examples: The running speed doesn't feel glacial (you need to permanently equip an accessory in Eiyuden to get an acceptable one), menus are SNAPPY where Eiyuden's is one of the laggiest ever, and while both games you have to change party members in towns Octopath doesn't have storage limits and you can always see who is equipped with what gear, and with only eight characters you don't have to go digging just to find the one thing you want to transfer from one character to another.
Eiyuden does have a lot of mini games, town building and a lot more voiced parts as a whole so there's that.
Inicdently I don't play on playing EC again until the DLC comes out once I finish the second ending, whereas with OT2 I've played for almost 380 hours, on top of 670 of the original.
Not mandatory for the castle, but do have to do them to recruit one character in relation to each, 2 for the top game.
Otherwise you have to do one round of one minigame for the story. The rest are optional.
Beigoma - get 2 recruits
Cards - must collect a certain amount of cards and beat said hero to recruit them
I would keep Octopath Traveller 2 regardless, (and buy Octopath Traveller 1 on sale when you can if you havn't)
This is very good advice in general. And yeah, OT1 and 2 are both good, but it kinda takes a bit of time for them to spin up, so to speak.
So if you have to choose, for me it's without a doubt OT2 first, (OT1 then if you never played it), then maybe if you have money left ... ECHH. But I would keep my money for another kind of game.
