As for hitting too hard I feel like it's all about strategy, pay attention to what your monster excels in and focus that. For example the Bee starter gets a skill where when it drops to 0 it gets back up for 10 HP which means it's an incredible tank. Focusing on Armor and Vitality, that sort of thing.
Personally, I don't struggle with fights I keep away from areas that are too high leveled, bail on areas that are 5 more levels than me and grind like pokemon until I'm ready to fight.
As for Poison, you can combat it with Regen cards that water types have, if I'm hurt by poison but heal that up in the same turn it doesn't effect my team. There's even regen cards that can heal the full team that my Fishbo has.
Not trying to say your points aren't valid I'm sure there's some balancing to be done here and there, even pokemon isn't perfect in balance. Games like this usually take tactile strategy to beat so if you're struggling look deeply into where you're struggling and chances are the game has ways to utilize items/cards and i'm sure you'll overcome it!
