Farming for money seems a bit weak though. Mining for ore is pointless when dungeon chests drop quite a bit of bars.
but the barn is helpful for using their drops for potions and fertilizer, and the farming is used for making concoctions for battles, and farming exp crops, stamina crops, and healing crops.
Spirit Barn is not REQUIRED but would make the game much easier in the long term. You can get eggs to raise so you can allocate stat points and pick cards from level 1 instead of whatever level you catch the spirit at. As mentioned you can also sell the spirit poop items for a generous amount of money. They are also required for some items in the game like resistance items for environmental damage effects on islands as well as Fertilizer for farming which gives a +50% effect to the particular stat you make the fertilizer for.
Farming is an excellent source of money though maybe not year 1. For spring I found mass planting Bolt plants with sprinklers is a great source of $$ my 2nd year. 72g with the skill tree boosts to sell price per bolt plant and its a reharvest so no need to replant until end of season. I also get seeds 50% of time of harvest so by the end of the season I will have next years seeds ready without spending a dime at Rowan's. Plenty of other Reharvestable Plants you can abuse for money or you can just use high sale price and bulk buy seeds or just use your greenhouse for money for a year and never worry about money again. Though spirit poop items are all year and sell like 50g at LEAST per item and more if you sell directly to Zed.
The thing that feels nearly useless overall is Combat. You dont even need to fight to level your spirits, you can just make concoctions with Snowdrop Fruit, Willowisp or Gift Plant + XP Fert and you can easily level a spirit to 30 just throwing potions at it, which is what im doing to easily faceroll through the temples cause I ignored those and instead worked on my foundation of like 70 spirits almost entirely full spirit barn with auto feeders and endless money. Another sad fact is once you get high end concoctions for taming, you can just throw those and get level 40+ spirits. Whats even worse is level 25~ish spirits can trample on level 50~ish spirits with the right potions. Just make sure your using elemental strength vs elemental weakness then chuck potions on turn #1 to either buff yours or nerf enemies and its depressingly easy.
This game brings no challenge to the table except collectionthoning. you have to collect spirits, collect plants and seeds, collect metals (which are so far the ONLY resource that has a hard limit on gathering, well the ores), collect this that this that and some more of it all. The only other thing besides Ore I can think of with a GATHERABLE hardcap would be Treasure Chests (you can pick em up so dont need to craft your own except maybe first 1) and whatever you find inside them. At this point im hoarding gems cause who knows, maybe someday they arnt just for selling.
Problem with that approach is that the game does something for everyone but nothing good. Alot of companys wanted to do the same approach in the past and all of them failed for that exact reason.
You simply cant please everyone. Sadly.
