I need fishing tips...

I can use WASD keys or my mouse to keep up with the fish but that has never worked for me? Any experts out there? It feels too tedious or intense for me to be relaxing atm

Yeah, having done the fishing mini game a few times, I don't really ever want to do it again. The hooks sold at the fish shop don't seem to do much, if they're even doing anything, and they're one-time use which is also tedious.

I'm playing on Steam Deck and it's so hard with the left thumb stick as well :D And I 'm someone who really enjoyed the fishing in Stardew :D! I feel like I'll avoid fishing in this game until there's a mod that changes it/makes it easier.

omg i was doing this ytd on my deck and i am a person who actively buys fishing games to play. this one was just impossible

I find fishing in this game tedious.. will be glad once i finish some quests that has me doing this. But idk if this is a tip but i found it easy-er ish to use a controller(not sure if you have one to use) and using the thumb stick vs using keyboard was way harder and apparently i dont know if its true but you can use 3 hooks.. I havent tired it yet because im taking a yr break from fishing in this game.

I believe the last time a thread like this came up, it was mentioned you can use the mouse to fish.

I've been using a controller to play, and find anything less than moonstone-level fish to be not that bad with the thumbstick.

That said, I can easily imagine it being hell to do with WASD.

Still, as Rhyono said, there was another thread about this, where it was mentioned that it is apparently possible to use the mouse to, I think it was, click and drag the target around.

what wyatt mentioned above - i kind of just stumbled across it - but i think you can equip more than one hook at a time - i had the hook for larger target equipped and wanted to switch to faster movement and it used up one of both but i was just finishing up and didn't try again - so i would say get 2 or 3 kinds and try them at the same time - i'm only like 10 hours in and caught a moonstone fish so must be something

Just coming in here to agree with using the mouse helps a lot with fishing, as you can just click and follow the fish around, instead of trying to chase it with WASD. Made it much less frustrating for me.

Fishing quick breakdown:
Controls use various inputs. You can use your mouse (click and hold on fish), wasd on keyboard or an analog on the controller. You can technically use mouse and keyboard at the same time, but the inputs do override and clash which makes it less reliable.

Aim for the center. When playing the minigame, the fish movement is pretty predictable, but when it's fast or a bit more random than normal, just aim to a bit more between the fish and the center so when it bounces off the outer wall, it's still in your marker.

Have 3 Snorcko (water islands, lizard with snorkel) These speed up hook time. Spirits only work when following you, so make sure they're not stored in your medallion.

Fishing Rods are unlocked in Tobin's shop with every moonstone quality fish turned in from Tobin's initial quest. (Blobfish, Sparkstar, Cinderfish) Fishing Rods reduce time to hook.

Sell to Tobin's shop, this adds them to the displaycase on the right.

All 3 items in Tobin's shop can be used at the same time. Use once to "equip". Each item is single-use, but having a stack auto-equips after each use. (Use each item once, but have a stack)

On keyboard/mouse you can use the right click AND spacebar at the same time to buy or sell, making quantity easier.

When fishing on islands, turn Spirit spawn rate down to decrease chances you're interrupted. (In the settings). Also consider Day length when hunting specific fish and when you have plenty of energy to reduce time used sleeping if you're doing the 1k fish achieve.

When fishing for boots, just do it on the dark islands, they have no other fish.

I finally caught a fish. After hours of fishing failures I changed the game settings to easy and fished with three hooks. There it was---a fish!
