Slime Rancher 2

Too many Tars
I dislike that the two options available are
- Off
- On

Tars are a classic example of things going wrong and as it is with slimes they do indeed eat anything in their food groups and crystallized ♥♥♥♥. It comes as no surprise that something goes wrong inside when they complicate themselves too much.

The natural spawn of things is whacky as hell though. I don't remember if the original Tars didn't multiply on consumption of normal slimes or if slimes tended not to mix as much in the first game but damn. Turn Tars on and spend a minute in a single spot, especially at night and the whole area is overturned with Tars.

I just do not remember Tars ever getting so out of hand so easily. It's like a new cascade event occurs every time you blink.

Tarrs DID multiply in consumption in the first game, you have to leave them alone for that to happen, as they can empty places somewhat easily if there's just enough to do so (assuming you have them happen in corrals ofc, the wilds there's too many slimes for that)

You deal with them more in the overworld itself than the corrals and conservatory/ranch. As a result they are, mostly, easier to deal with in the latter areas. It's like a safe space and when you get out of it things get rough. Just run from them or get daring to get rid of them on your own.

I had the same observation - it isn't like in the original Slime Rancher where oh no, there's a couple of tarr, I need to tackle this. Now when I hear tarr I COMPLETELY abandon what I'm doing to go blast them with water. When I first started in the ember map, I cleared half of one area and then heard the tarr music. Went around the corner and there were at LEAST twenty or thirty tarr.

The wild largo slimes seem to seek out and eat that dreaded third plort WAY more frequently than in the first game.

How slow were you going my first run through of the entire map I really didn't see tarr unless I stayed in an area for like 5 minutes to wait for something

I mean, for me Tar's have always been an important thing in the game. It shows the necessity of being a good farmer, in order to prevent a phenomenon that occurs frequent in nature and which seems to be the only balancing factor, preventing an inherent overpopulation of slimes in the world. They might appear aplenty and become big, hungry creatures, but they are self-destructive, keeping the amount that could possibly survive on their own fairly low.

Tarr just happen. They can just naturally spawn, replacing any slimes that would normally have spawned in an area. Several times I've used my teleporters to warp to the back end of Ember Valley or Starlight Strand, just to find maybe 15 Tarr waiting for me with no other slimes or plorts on the ground. No chance for such slimes to have even spawned in.

Combine that with Slime spawning and behavior. In any given zone there are always at least three kinds of slimes running around, eating anything in sight. Very first area, you have Pinks and Cottons with the occasional tabby just to mess with you, and of course Phosphors happen when night falls. My own testing with some of the largos has them favoring plorts over food when they're hungry as well, they'll happly go after a third plort if one exists even if there's an appropriate food patch closer to them. This of course promotes Tarrs happening.

On the plus side, Tarrs do seem tame compared to the first game. They largely ignore the rancher if there's any other slimes around for them to harass, had plenty just bounce past me while I'm going about my business ignoring them. They also seem to pop on their own given enough time without having eaten a slime, even if you don't do anything about them. If they're in the way, there's always ocean nearby to toss them into, so much so that I don't even bother switching to the water tank.

I guess a place called Rainbow Island would of course have tons of the "Rainbow" slimes everywhere. Dunno what I expected.

Can I ask why? Why do you need to go tackle them? Being quite serious and perhaps it's just a different play style. I'll describe why I'm confused.

Ember Isle. Okay, there's a branch to the right when you are running through from porting in, that goes to the Rock Gordo. On the other side of that off-shoot (away from port,) I dropped a refinery link and a port home.

That valley is constantly under assault. And so is the Sandy beach pathway off to the left.
You have any idea how many plorts I've collected cause all the Tarr's clearing the place then running off into the sand and water?

I don't need to run pinks on my farm (I'm maxed out refiner, etc.) I don't need to run Phos... Angler (I do anyways cause I like em) or Tabby's. I get back and everything is dying and there are plorts *everywhere*. I'm off loading oil and stuff as fast as possible to clean up massive amounts of plorts.

Why, would you interrupt that and the possible clearing rate for faster gold/lucky showings?

I think it's great but they should multiply slower. Since you unlock tech early in this game I think the intended solution for wild tars is to set up water turrets in each area to protect it. You'll unlock a better turret to make it easier as well.
