Once you have an enemy in your reticule will indicate target lock progress.
i thought the same thing till i saw the reticle turn green on the outside ring while aiming and then watched the two missiles eject towards the sub I was attacking.
they do need a clear line of sight to hit though their mark and do some damage.
Use cross on target, wait till it's locked time, and it's auto fire, but it's not 100% fire and forgot, you still had to see what was target doing, if enemies fly left or right, roll, it's might miss it, if enemies fly toward to you or from you, it's had good chance to hit.
Now there is target that hide or block view, like giant pirate plane or ship or subs, you had to fly up or fly low where missile would hit, missile would not turn toward or moving up and down to hit target, it's matter where you fire at as long as it's clear to shoot target without blocking missile, more or less.
