You increase strength for weapons that needed it, your dex for the same and same for int (They are called something different in game but follow the same idea as I mentioned).
I have not tried going with a legion attack style (Your prosthetic arm in the game) but from what i noticed this does not seem to be viable and its mostly designed for support purposes.
The left arm is a bit more limited and generally functions more like a sub-weapon for utility or emergency uses. It's useful, but it can't serve as a primary weapon (though later upgrades can let you use it far more often than at the start.)
Lies of P has a lot of way you can customize your character and make it your own. There are no range/magic builds as in DS games but it was never promised. However, there is a lot of weapons that you can customize by trying different blades and hilts. You also have Legion arm, which is stand-alone tool with its own customization.
You will not be making ultra unique build since you are still stuck with a melee weapon as a main source of damage but the game offers ample amount of ways to make the character yours--Legion arms, P-Organs customization, weapon parts mixing.
