what's the point of of the lie mechanic?
basically every time you have a a choice to cause misery to others or yourself by saying the truth or just lie

and yet there are no visible effects or hints to what lying actually does. is this is just a thought experiment or does it somehow matters in the end?

if you know, can you please tell without spoiling the main plot?

Unlocks character appearance options, a secret weapon, and an alternate ending.

If you read the lore of the game, it follows the laws of machines. In short, puppets cannot lie. So lying is the trait of a human, aka real boy. Where as telling the truth, is the trait of a puppet. As you lie and begin to do more "Human" things, you start to turn more human.

ok great, it sounds very positive. so what incentive does the player have to say the truth? unless a puppet developing a human soul will somehow end in disaster...?

Oh damn, I was following the actual rules of the Pinocchio story, where telling the truth is how to become a real boy. Whoops.

maybe that's the point? to full people into thinking that telling the truth is important to matter how badly the truth will devestate someone?

Is the lying system just a gimmick of a simple mini game of "right or wrong" questions, or does it really shape your character with larger implications to the story ?

Lying is the more humane option in the game while the truth is apathetic to others and hurts. I'm sure you can figure out which one makes you a real boy. So yea, they made the two right or wrong, depending if you want to make others happy or sad.

So it doesn't change anything, it's just two different ways to experience the story ?

It changes the ending along with appearance options for lying. You also get a special weapon for lying enough and fulfilling other requirements. Some rewards can also only be obtained by lying or telling the truth, so NG+ is desirable.

I was actually wondering if you could by the end side with the machines and take over the world, but apparently you cant, which is a bummer, because not telling lies only makes you miss out on stuff and nothing else, apparently. A big missed opportunity imo

while i hate being a meanie in games i have to agree, but who knows, maybe there will be an update or DLC to adress that.
i don't see Pino helping the insane puppets to destroy humanity but a different ending when all the robots become sane but dominate human society would be interesting
