Level design is largely trash, but so's Nioh's. It's not what you play the game for. Get it now.
It's very formulaic, expecting you to give exact responses to exact actions from enemies and bosses.
It's nowhere near as free-form and player-driven as Nioh 2.
Then again I'd argue that Nioh 2 isn't even a soulslike.
Weapon variety is also lacking, despite the advertised DIY weapon feature.
No real dual weapons, no exotic weapons, no unarmed combat, no stances. It does have weapon arts system at least, but it's of little consolation.
How is weapon variety "lacking" when you can make any standard weapon into any other standard weapon? Then you have the boss weapons. Are you even sure what "lacking" means when it comes to variety?
But then again, nothing is. You're sneering at Messi, who is not Ronaldo and therefore TRASH!
Get Lies of P. And also Nioh 2.
DMC5 has better combat than Nioh 2. You'll probably say it's a different genre, but given that Nioh 2 has multiple stances, combos, etc... is it? Nioh 2 is much closer in combat design to Devil May Cry than Dark Souls (or Lies of P).
Nioh 2 has a stamina system. Devil May Cry doesn't. You also can't do air combos in Nioh.
Bought the game on sale now, and have about 10ish hours in it.
The combat feels good and similar in response to dark souls 3/bloodborne.
i think the Steam reviews speak for themselves, and anyone that enjoy the souls combat style should give it a try.
Just don't expect a big open world, the game is quite linear, while you can still go back for secrets
Let's compare LOP to DS3, without DLC, the 2016 basic version.
Both games have boss weapons and weapon arts, ok, that's pretty even.
DS3 has dual swords and daggers, each pair with slightly different movesets (dual katanas vs dual falchions for example). LOP only has scissors, which is a basic sword that splits only for weapon arts. And then DS3 has exotic great sword & dagger dual weapon. All of which can switch stance to a singular weapon moveset.
DS3 has bows and crossbows.
DS3 has magic, like 4 different kinds of magic, each with a bunch of spells.
DS3 has shields.
DS3 has whips.
DS3 has demon fist, which is basically martial arts moveset.
DS3 does NOT have undodgeable attacks on enemies and bosses. Your i-frames are sacred, untouchable and ever-present. You can still parry most bosses. You will NOT lose your life on successful parry, even if enemy won't go into reposte state. And with some weapons, like daggers, you can access alternative dodge moves.
So DS3 is way less strict and simon-says-y than LOP when it comes to combat, WHILE having more weapon and movement variety.
Now as a game pass game, or for 60+% off (not 40% like now) LOP is still good game. It's beautiful, story and lore are excellent and captivating, music is good, combat is still good don't get me wrong, it's on par with Surge games or Steelrising, and I absolutely love Surge and Steelrising.
You think I'm some sorta hater, but I'm not, but op asked to compare this game to staples of the genre, instead of Surge or Steelrising, so I did.
Gameplay-wise this game is still B-tier, just like anything that isn't made by From Software or Team Ninja, and again, Nioh 2 should be compared to Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden instead IMO.
Having less weapon types does not mean Lies of P is lacking weapons. Unlike Dark Souls 3, the game you're comparing it to, Lies of P has no useless weapon due to how well balanced they are, and with the way the assembly system works, you can make any weapon work regardless if it started as a sword and you turned it into a spear or a hammer. I'd rather have 25 weapons that can all be good over 80 and only 30 of them are worth looking at. Show me in Dark Souls 3 where a single weapon doubles as a scythe and whip, or a sword and a spear, or a sawblade that can also be thrown and comes back like a boomerang? Also, magic isn't a weapon type. It's a playstyle. Not the same thing.
Nioh is not like Devil May cry or Ninja Gaiden at all. Nioh relies on stamina management and an RNG loot system, whereas Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden are full on action games where staying mobile is the key to victory. You also can't do air combos in Nioh, something both DMC and NG make heavy use of with skilled players.
I don't think you're a hater. I just think you're wrong and don't know what you're talking about.
Also, the map design is pretty awful Felt like a slog of walking and killing chaff. Exploration was largely unrewarding.
Dark Souls 3 doesn't have useless weapons either. You can make ANY weapon work and wreck the game with it. There is distinct difference in movesets between short sword, long sword, broad sword and lotric sword, despite all of them being straight swords. That's just one example.
Prejudiced much?
