Quality build is probably the way to go for a first-time playthrough, especially since you can switch handles. It'll allow you to experiment with a lot of options while not losing out on damage. Don't underestimate the elemental stat either, it's very powerful if you want to go that route.
The best weapon in the game is a boss weapon. You can try it out if you want. It's the Seven Coil Spring Sword that you can get from the boss weapon merchant. Motivity B Technique C.
For normal weapons you can try the Greatsword of Fate blade and experiment with putting it on different handles.
Proof of Humanity has a B / B scaling AND has a 30% Crit Chance + one of the Fable Arts gives you a Crit Chance Buff, you can combine it then with the Crit Dmg Amulet.
The actual best weapon in the game if you don't factor in aesthetics is the Trident of the Covenant. It doesn't look... bad, just not nearly as nice as a lot of the other options.
If you do factor in aesthetics, the Seven Coil Spring Sword is a definite contender, yeah.
The Proof of Humanity is a little underwhelming for the final boss weapon, honestly it gets outclassed by the Trident. It's not horrible though.
The Puppet Ripper is very good, better for groups than bosses though.
The Holy Sword of the Ark is also a solid choice.
The Twin Dragons Sword is awesome, but it's Technique focused, not balanced.
The others are pretty meh. Elegance has a fun gimmick, but it doesn't really work all that well. Frozen Feast sucks, but you do need it for one random sidequest. Noblesse Oblige is underwhelming, it just has a money-stealing gimmick and nothing else. I may be missing one, but it's probably not worth it if I can't remember off the top of my head.
Oh yeah, there's also the special weapons. Golden Lie is fun, but gets stronger near the end of a playthrough. And the glaive thingy from the special event is pretty strong honestly, though still not quite as good as the Trident.
Frozen Feast is actually pretty good, you just have to spend Fable on unlocking it or on the special hit. It's definitely more of a patience weapon, but it's fun to play around with something like that.
