You may need to tap it repeatedly if the enemy has a multiple-hit combo swing, tapping it in time with each attack. The issue here is like someone mentioned in another thread - the parrying seems to be generous if you tap it slightly too early, but punishing if you catch it slightly too late. So I found hitting it a bit before I thought I needed to made me perfect parry much more often.
Find a stargazer with a normal enemy close by, and don't attack them at all. Just run up and test when you need to hit it to get the parry. It eventually clicks but the learning curve was a bit steep at first. You got this!
So after dying to the first boss twice, then practicing on the boxing puppet for some time, I was able to get the basics idea of it and beat the boss in the third go.
But yeah, that first boss is impossible unless you get that core mechanic down. But once you do, he's easy. I really think I'm going to like this game.
Just hold block button, not tapping, until enemy hit surely on your block. At least, it will block safely.
