Is there any reason to fight the black cat?

it seems like you just get a small amount of souls and the mask. but you get the mask anyway if you just give him fruit. so it seems like its easier to just pay him off?

Well it's easier, sure. You're not always given the option though. I believe if you deny the two's initial request for Fruit he will be hostile regardless.

ok, so it doesn't "matter" ending wise if i just give him the fruit and don't kill him

Ending wise I don't believe so. Don't think any interactions with the two affect Humanity so it should be fine but don't hold me to that.

Near as I can tell, having both killed and not killed him, there is no upside to killing him, it gets you his mask either way. Same with Red Fox.

Honestly, aside from Alidoro, I don't think there's much of a benefit for killing any NPCs if there's a peaceful option.
