Holy sword of the ark boss weapon is great.
You just have to adapt to a different play style.
Tight places are hell though... seriously, carry a smaller secondary weapon for those areas, cause otherwise you will break your arm hitting the wall constantly.
If I weren't trying weapons for fun and just used what's best, I'd be using faster weapons because there isn't much incentive to use slow weapons.
fast weapons have consistent dps, better mobility due to less animation lock (and some weapons themselves have amazing mobility, like the katana), generally more utility fable arts to work with
slow weapons need to be played around poking and unleashing huge bursts of damage with similarly huge bursts of stagger, and ultimately into fatal attacks and then wakeup charged/fable attacks. finding openings for charged attacks is important, staggering bosses is your bread and butter really, as is recognizing the exact moment an enemy leaves the invulnerable/reduced damage state as it gets up from a fatal attack. they're inherently safer to block with because of their superior guard damage reduction
Fast enemies are the bane of your existence with these weapons, but their solid block (amplified by P-Organ passives) make up for that. Finding openings is just a matter of using a different approach. Personally, I specced into weapon destruction passives to try and break boss weapons, which made some encounters significantly easier to finish (e.g. Romeo, White Lady).
I'm playing through NG+ with Noblesse Oblige which is basically a big ol' slow club, and it's growing into one of my favorite weapons. It's Fable attack is great and the guard and regen is fantastic.
A charged heavy attack can floor most, and can stagger in no time. Less about the number of hits but more the impact of them. Just gotta play it a bit slower.
And I love it, but something like the Wrench, it's just too slow, for me.
Edit: still a super fun experience that I likely won't do again, but glad I did it once
But honestly, my biggest argument is that the Motivity weapons feel great when they land hits, and they look cool. Greatsword of Fate is, IMO, the best starting weapon. I did my entire first playthrough with it (except for a certain lightning boss we shan't name that was ripped right out of Bloodborne). GoF is cool as heck, it's got a stabbing and a slashing attack, and it's got good range. I don't know about you, but when I try to use a smaller weapon like the Salamander Dagger or my newest love - Mjolnir head on a Baton base - I tend to whiff against the larger bosses.
Yes, the ultra category is unwieldy -- looking at you, Big Pipe Wrench, it's so slow I yawn when I swing. But anything below that is perfectly viable for finishing the game.
If you're looking for a nice middle ground for a weapon that isn't too heavy but isn't technically a Motivity weapon -- Puppet Ripper all the way. Holy Sword of the Ark IS Motivity, but the Alter ability is kinda OP and swings much faster than regular attacks. Cursed Knight's Halberd is a decent all-around choice, too.
But, IDK. I just like watching enemies literally run headfirst into a swing I started five minutes ago. Is Motivity the smart choice? Probably not. Is it extremely satisfying? Hella. I probably frustrated myself more than I needed to on my first playthrough, but I don't regret it. I'm trying out more Technique/neutral weapons now, and I feel like I just unlocked Video Game Journalist Mode.
You still have to be careful and keep an eye on the enemy to decide if you should go for a second swing, though since it still takes a brief moment to recover.
I cleared NG+ recently, I used Bone-Cutting Blade combined with Krat police baton for both playthroughs to great success. It is hard hitting weapon with nice reach and very nice move set due to the baton handle. Its charged heavy attack is especially good because it goes off fast and has long reach. It also staggers enemies very well, especially its charged attack.
I have started NG++ just to see how Phase 7 of P-organ upgrades impacts my character and also decided to use Proof of Humanity sword from last boss ergo on my short exploration (killed Fuoco in Act 3 so far). I can tell that Proof of Humanity absolutely does not stagger enemies no matter what attacks I use. I have to perfect guard them to stagger and than hit charged attack to sit them on their ass. I had no problems to stagger enemies just from hits with Bone-Cutting blade.
I also used Noblesse Oblige, Manus' boss weapon, for farming Ergo, which is very slow weapon. It works quite well with runnig attacks and Link attack from your Legion Arm that lunch you into air and you slam down. However, this weapon requires very good positioning and timing compared to Bone-cutting blade or even Frozen Feat sword. It hits like a truck though :)
