Big weapons seem so useless in this game.
So i decided to replay the game, and get a different ending, with different choices, and also play with heavy weapons this time, rather than Tech weapons of my first playthrough. Big weapons seems so slow that nearly every enemy can hit you before you hit them, and the damage payoff just isnt worth it. I feel like i could beat enemies much faster with Tech weapons, and still have stamina after. With bosses its even worse.

They're not. You're fine attacking once a boss's string is over. There's even enough time for a charged attack. Obviously you won't get as many hits in so it's easier to get hit from greed

I played through the game twice with motivity weapons.
Holy sword of the ark boss weapon is great.

You just have to adapt to a different play style.

Like mentioned, you gotta play differently to handle these weapons, one particular advantage they have is that they block better than smaller weapons.

Tight places are hell though... seriously, carry a smaller secondary weapon for those areas, cause otherwise you will break your arm hitting the wall constantly.

THIS 1000%. The most annoying thing about heavy weapons is many of them are large and swing wide. Holy sword has a workaround by shifting back to the smaller version but some heavy weapons are a huge pain in this regard

I recommend a dagger, its light so capacity wont be an issue, plus, theyre pretty good in this game, enough to be a main weapon (cant say the same for Fromsoft's souls games...)

I've been experimenting with the Frozen Feast for a little bit since it reminds me of the Curved Wolf Greatsword in Dark Souls 3 (you're rewarded for aggression). Been going through NG+ mostly fine but the biggest struggle is not having hyperarmor or poise. Devs kind of rectified this by giving some fable attacks beefy poise, but I think big slow weapons should get a buff in this regard. The weapon's saving grace is its special effect of swinging faster with every stack it gets from hitting enemies with it (max 4), and its fable art of instantly giving you max stacks.

If I weren't trying weapons for fun and just used what's best, I'd be using faster weapons because there isn't much incentive to use slow weapons.

just a different type of gameplay

fast weapons have consistent dps, better mobility due to less animation lock (and some weapons themselves have amazing mobility, like the katana), generally more utility fable arts to work with

slow weapons need to be played around poking and unleashing huge bursts of damage with similarly huge bursts of stagger, and ultimately into fatal attacks and then wakeup charged/fable attacks. finding openings for charged attacks is important, staggering bosses is your bread and butter really, as is recognizing the exact moment an enemy leaves the invulnerable/reduced damage state as it gets up from a fatal attack. they're inherently safer to block with because of their superior guard damage reduction

I'm at Chapter 8 and have been playing with heavy weapons from the get-go. While I originally also shared similar grievances, I find them to be quite ok. I've got the Seven-something Greatsword boss weapon and the beginner greatsword mounted on the pick axe/wrench handle. The latter is particularly slow, but hits really hard.

Fast enemies are the bane of your existence with these weapons, but their solid block (amplified by P-Organ passives) make up for that. Finding openings is just a matter of using a different approach. Personally, I specced into weapon destruction passives to try and break boss weapons, which made some encounters significantly easier to finish (e.g. Romeo, White Lady).

A lot of high scaling Motivity builds have a lot of Guard absorption. You have to be more defensive and then give them the good ol' bonk when they're vulnerable.

I'm playing through NG+ with Noblesse Oblige which is basically a big ol' slow club, and it's growing into one of my favorite weapons. It's Fable attack is great and the guard and regen is fantastic.

A charged heavy attack can floor most, and can stagger in no time. Less about the number of hits but more the impact of them. Just gotta play it a bit slower.

I'm using the Seven-Coil Spring Sword (who named this thing?)
And I love it, but something like the Wrench, it's just too slow, for me.
Krazy Wallet 3/out./2023 às 22:02
My first run was a heavy weapon, second was an advanced builds with swords, and the third was with Etiquette. Don't use Etiquette. You'll be jabbing for days and nothing staggers. Honestly, even using fable arts, you can only really count on one stagger in the end game bosses. Trust me, I was being aggressive with that darn umbrella!

Edit: still a super fun experience that I likely won't do again, but glad I did it once

I mean, you're not wrong??? The game has literally has one (1) poise and it's passed off between the bosses. A single hit can stagger pretty much all of the regular enemies. But for ones that were special enemies, minibosses, or bosses, I notice that they stagger much more often with Motivity weapons than with Technique weapons. Those staggers are great for whaling in some extra damage.

But honestly, my biggest argument is that the Motivity weapons feel great when they land hits, and they look cool. Greatsword of Fate is, IMO, the best starting weapon. I did my entire first playthrough with it (except for a certain lightning boss we shan't name that was ripped right out of Bloodborne). GoF is cool as heck, it's got a stabbing and a slashing attack, and it's got good range. I don't know about you, but when I try to use a smaller weapon like the Salamander Dagger or my newest love - Mjolnir head on a Baton base - I tend to whiff against the larger bosses.

Yes, the ultra category is unwieldy -- looking at you, Big Pipe Wrench, it's so slow I yawn when I swing. But anything below that is perfectly viable for finishing the game.

If you're looking for a nice middle ground for a weapon that isn't too heavy but isn't technically a Motivity weapon -- Puppet Ripper all the way. Holy Sword of the Ark IS Motivity, but the Alter ability is kinda OP and swings much faster than regular attacks. Cursed Knight's Halberd is a decent all-around choice, too.

But, IDK. I just like watching enemies literally run headfirst into a swing I started five minutes ago. Is Motivity the smart choice? Probably not. Is it extremely satisfying? Hella. I probably frustrated myself more than I needed to on my first playthrough, but I don't regret it. I'm trying out more Technique/neutral weapons now, and I feel like I just unlocked Video Game Journalist Mode.

I am going to Swamp monster boss fight soon, and so far i can def say playing with bigger weapons is nowhere near as fun as the faster/smaller weapons. Very slow, and boring. If you like them cool, but i am very happy i didnt go with them on my first playthrough. They do look cooler than the smaller/faster weapons, and you do show that they hit hard, but its not enough to make me want to play with it first.

I think the Seven-Coil Spring Sword is a great middle ground for a Motivity build. It swings pretty quickly and it doesn't feel like it completely throws him off his balance when he swings like the other heavy weapons.

You still have to be careful and keep an eye on the enemy to decide if you should go for a second swing, though since it still takes a brief moment to recover.

I do not fully agree with OP, however, slow but hard hitting weapons have their challenges to be used effectively.

I cleared NG+ recently, I used Bone-Cutting Blade combined with Krat police baton for both playthroughs to great success. It is hard hitting weapon with nice reach and very nice move set due to the baton handle. Its charged heavy attack is especially good because it goes off fast and has long reach. It also staggers enemies very well, especially its charged attack.

I have started NG++ just to see how Phase 7 of P-organ upgrades impacts my character and also decided to use Proof of Humanity sword from last boss ergo on my short exploration (killed Fuoco in Act 3 so far). I can tell that Proof of Humanity absolutely does not stagger enemies no matter what attacks I use. I have to perfect guard them to stagger and than hit charged attack to sit them on their ass. I had no problems to stagger enemies just from hits with Bone-Cutting blade.

I also used Noblesse Oblige, Manus' boss weapon, for farming Ergo, which is very slow weapon. It works quite well with runnig attacks and Link attack from your Legion Arm that lunch you into air and you slam down. However, this weapon requires very good positioning and timing compared to Bone-cutting blade or even Frozen Feat sword. It hits like a truck though :)
