You unlock the next phase by completing 2 nodes I think. Later in the game you'll find a place that lets you respec everything.

Every phase consists of four upgrades.

In order to get an upgrade, a quartz needs to be slotted into all of the upgrade's slots.

Every two upgrades unlocked, the next phase unlocks. They can be any two upgrades, not just in the most-recently-unlocked phase.

You can respec later in the game using another currency. You used to have to use these at a certain statue to respec, but after an update they moved the respec to be more obvious and immediately accessible. Without spoilers, the thing that gives you the new currency can also be used to respec.

Spoilery version of the answer:
You will unlock the gold coin fruit tree eventually. It gives you currency you can use for respecs and wishstones. You used to have to use them at the Saintess of Mercy statue (which you unlock even later) but they made added respeccing to the tree as well. When the tree doesn't have any fruit available, you can interact with it and choose to respec / inject it.
