Bug: What the heck is going on with the Palworld update effecting storage space?
So, the Palworld update was 24 gigabytes download yesterday.
I installed the update and it takes up well over 30 additional gigabytes on my computer.
Palworld shouldn't have the installed files on a PC double in size from such a tiny small bug fix update. Bug fixes shouldn't normally be this massive. This is the hugest game size increase I have ever seen. I've been desperately trying to free up space on my computer because of this mess. Did Pocket Pair forget to optimize the file size of the bug fix somehow? I struggle to understand how a game massively gigantically bloats in size from a tiny bug fix update.

This is how it works:
A patch gets released, lets say its 123 MB
The game size is say 50GB

That 123MB patch, updates files that are in those 50GB game files.
Those 50GB game files are compressed / packed. So in order to update files in them, steam needs to unpack them.
Unpacking them also needs space.
So you need 50GB for the game + 50GB for unpacking + 123MB for the update.

Once everything is patched the extra50GB needed for patching/unpacking are freed up.
This is how steam patching works for every single game.

your saying things I obviously know and are providing not a single useful bit of input.
you clearly did not read what you replied to.
nothing was freed up. at all. the space the game took up massively increased. and over a tiny bug fix update. the game now takes up over twice the space on my computer.
this has never happened to me with any other Palworld update before. this is the only update this has ever occurred. I am just curious why that is? was the game update poorly optimized? is steam failing to free up space? is my PC somehow mismanaging download data?
You claim to have a Masters in Computer Engineering and you are surprised that a 24gb download has extracted to a 30gb install?

Right click on the game in your library, then check the installed files tab. You should see the space it's occupying. For me, it's 30gb. If you're seeing more than 30gb then try restarting your computer or doing a complete un/re-install.

After uninstalling Palworld, which Steam says is a 30 gigabyte size game, I only got 2 gigabytes of additional free space on my PC. So I think this might have to do mostly with my PC, and not with Palworld, because my PC is not properly registering the size of free space and file size. I think it is because I am currently using the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Windows on my PC, and I believe Windows stupid features are mismanaging and miscommunicating the amount of free space and space usage, because of course with all the stupid AI ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Windows forces down my throat it is probably related to that...
Btw, I don't have a Masters degree. Never claimed that before. My brother however does have such a degree and he does claim that, I let him use my account every now and then, since he loves using it for first person shooter games and survival games where he can hunt and kill zombies.
I think I might have to do a lot more than restarting and uninstall reinstall, because my computer is absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ right now and this is taking more troubleshooting than I can manage.
I do not think you all can help me with this, because this problem has a lot more to do with the way my PC's operating system's garbage is reacting to Palworld installations and updates, and my PC is very specifically the problem.
Gosh I love eating cheese flavoured popcorn during these things.

do you mind helping me fix whatever is wrong with my PC? whatever is going on my free space on my hard drive is fluctuating, because Windows is really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ horrible and I truly hate it. I figured I had uninstalled CoPilot and other AI ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ months ago so my PC should work better, but it doesn't. It really doesn't, and AI ♥♥♥♥ still somehow exists on my PC. It is getting very annoying to manage this crap. I can't even reinstall Palworld because my PC says I never got all the free space from uninstalling it. I got no clue what stupid ♥♥♥♥ Windows is doing even after restarting my PC.
Make sure to empty your recycle bin. You can also try to run 'Defragment and Optimize Drives' (search that in the windows menu). It should help to clean up any space that is claimed by ghost files.

BTW - I don't personally care but you shouldn't announce that you are sharing your account with someone else, as that is against the Steam TOS and could lead to your account getting banned.

What you should do is instead add your brother's account (he should make his own) to your family sharing group, and he will be able to play your games from his account. You will both maintain your account security that way.

my brother Sean has his own account though. this account is my account.
and yes, we are sharing via that method with family sharing already.

I tried the defragment optimize thing already, it doesn't seem to have helped. I am unsure why.

I am beginning to think I might as well delete any mention of my multi-millionaire tech executive scumbag brother from my profile bio. People seem to get confused, a lot, and they lack the ability to realize that he has his own account and that my account I use is separate from his account, this account is my account. People seem oblivious to the fact that he does not use this account directly, and that he uses it via that family sharing group method. Lack of awareness to that fact doesn't shock me. I actually wouldn't be surprised if people sent false reports and lied to Steam at one point over the fact that they don't have the intelligence necessary to understand this stuff.

I wouldn't have thought such a thing if you didn't explicitly say it moments ago.

he uses it via the family group sharing method you mentioned sir! which I mentioned earlier! he doesn't own the account. and he doesn't use it in the way you think he does.

we're both middle-aged adults who live in completely different households for heck's sake. how do you think this works when he can't even use my computer because he lives in a completely different state here in the USA?

I think you should ask your brother to help.
I am still running 11 24H2.
My system has been lobotomized.
