HOW TO MOD PALWORLD ON LINUX: Updated for 2025!
Hello Everyone! I was having a hell of a time trying to get mods to work on Linux and the information out there is quite out of date and not useful in the slightest. After some tinkering I found how to enable UE4SS the proper way (with updated UE4SS and updated mods) and figured it would be useful to share here.

Installing the mod is straightforward, but the configuration is a little wonky. If you don't have it properly configured you can run into crashes and EOS lockouts. This has worked for me and all mods installed are working as intended. Hope this helps.

ACQUIRING MODS:

  1. Download UE4SS from Nexus Mods. (RTFM. Do not skip on the reading.) Palworld UE4SS Website Link Here! [pwmodding.wiki]
  2. Follow the Steam instructions for install.
  3. Download the mods you want and install them, ensuring you read the specific path they want to be installed in. (Some are .PAKs which go in a ~mods folder, some are lua which go in logic_mods, and some are scripts which go in ue4ss/mods. The mod itself will tell you.)
  4. Done.

LINUX CONFIGURATION:

  1. Open ProtronTricks
  2. Select "Palworld" from the list.
  3. Click OK on all the dialog boxes until a menu appears
  4. Select "Default Wine Prefix"
  5. Select "Run winecfg"
  6. Go to "Library" tab
  7. Above the list of libraries you will see a blank box that says "Add new override for library". Type the following exactly how it is below in the blank bar.
    dwmapi
  8. Then click "Add" to the right.
  9. Click "Apply" then "Close"

When you add the api, next to it you should see (native, builtin). If you see this, you are good to go. This is more of a permanent solution. If you want quick enable/disable, the following is for you.

WINEDLL OVERRIDE COMMAND:

  1. After installing UE4SS and Mods, open Palworlds properties.
  2. In the launch option enter the following.
    WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dwmapi=n,b"
  3. The new versions of UE4SS use this and not Xinput. If you have xinput1_3 from previous mods, delete that, update your UE4SS, and use this command to enable mods.

I recommend using the mod config menu as its a very quick and easy way to see if you got the mod enabled or not.

I used the permanent method but have tested both and they both work without issue. Always double check someones code you find online and understand what you're putting in before doing so. The above methods are working for me on Arch/Hypr, Arch/KDE, SteamDeck, and AFS. Should work across the board more than likely!

Hopefully this helps someone as figuring this out was a pain in 2025, and I couldn't find up to date information anywhere online. There is a LOT of incorrect information on reddit with people digging their heels in. This is what i came across first, none of it works to save you all time. Anything referring to xinput1_3 is out of date as that is no longer used since 3.0.1 of UE4SS.

Have a fantastic day and thanks for reading!

How exactly can I install UE4SS on Linux? What console commands should I use? And what is ProtonTricks?

On my server, I only have access to the game’s console and the server files. That’s it. I can add new files/folders to the server or edit existing ones — but nothing beyond that.
This is way over thought. Download UE4SS. Copy in folder as described. Download mods, done. Nothing else is needed unless you have a unique setup. Don't use the steam workshop as that is currently bugged for linux.
Yes, this seems overly complicated. You’ve described some rather obscure steps that I simply can’t replicate on my server.

What exactly is «ProtonTricks»?

You mentioned: «After installing UE4SS and Mods, open Palworld’s properties». But where should I install UE4SS if my server doesn’t have a Win64 folder? Where is it supposed to go?

It seems to me that your guide might be incomplete — or perhaps it only applies to very specific types of servers.
Are the steam workshop the mods you are showing to install or nexus mods?

For linux apparently the ue4ss doesn't work unless you use wine.

Below is what I googled for installing wine in ubuntu:

1. Install Wine: Ensure Wine is installed on your Ubuntu system. You can install it using your package manager:

sudo apt install wine wine64 winbind

first install proton in steam,
then install palworld,

For steam workshop it should be open the palworld workshop and subscribe to the ue4ss mod, and then the mod you want that uses ue4ss,

then open palworld, options, open mod manager, and enable the mods. palworld should close and reopen.

Are you all talking about servers that you have physical access to? I only have remote access via a browser. I don’t have access to the entire remote machine — just to the Palworld server console and its file system. I can’t install whatever I want on it.
I don't know online server file systems, they are different. Some don't allow file changes.
I don't know where all this extra config stuff is coming from, it works fine to just extract the files into the palworld folder as per the instructions.

If you're playing through steam you don't need to install or use wine, steam will use proton and proton is a fork of wine.

The UE4SS on steam workshop specifically currently does not work on linux due to some issue with the workshop integration. Pocketpair needs to fix that on their end.
You can use the workshop version of UE4SS if you make a few soft links. You can run this in a terminal to do it after subscribing to it in the workshop. Change the first line if your game isn't installed in the default location.
cd ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Palworld; ln -rs Mods/NativeMods/UE4SS/Mods Pal/Binaries/Win64; ln -rs Mods/NativeMods/UE4SS/UE4SS-settings.ini Pal/Binaries/Win64; ln -rs Mods/NativeMods/UE4SS/UE4SS.dll Pal/Binaries/Win64/dwmapi.dll;
This will result in the UE4SS mods, settings, and log files being in the Win64 folder instead of Win64/ue4ss.
Please at least read the topic title if you don’t feel like reading the entire post. The topic is about a server, specifically a Linux server. What do Win64 and Steam have to do with this?

K14M... Do you think only servers run Linux? Do you think only Windows exists as a personal OS?

The title is listerally about linux there is NOTHING about servers. A "server" is just any computer system that runs software for other machines on a network to access.

The ONLY person talking about a server is you. You are literally lost.

To run UE4SS and PalSchema on a Linux server, you must switch from the native Linux executable (PalServer-Linux-Shipping) to the Windows executable (PalServer.exe) running via Wine.

Why? UE4SS relies on injecting .dll files (specifically dwmapi.dll), which is a Windows-only mechanism.

Tell me who you are paying to host your private server and can help you research

Then you literally cannot mod your palserver. You literally just said you do not have access to install files. Unless you were being obtuse?
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dwmapi=n,b"

I was looking for this. Thank you!

In this particular thread, we are discussing only Linux servers. There’s no need to bring anything else into the conversation. If the hosting provider you’re using only offers Linux‑based servers, then why mention Windows at all?

I’ve already mentioned that I only have access to the server files and the game console — nothing more.

What is ProtonTricks? I don’t have that. All I have is the host’s website, through which I can edit, delete, or add files to the server, and the game console, which allows me to shut down or restart the server. However, I cannot, for example, run any executable file on this remote machine beyond the server itself.

How are you that illiterate???

THIS THREAD IS NOT ABOUT SERVERS AT ALL THIS THREAD IS ABOUT GETTING MODS TO WORK IN LINUX

THERE IS NOTHING ABOUT SERVERS NOT ONE BIT

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU

LINUX DOESN'T AUTOMATICALLY MEAN ITS A SERVER

ONLY YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT SERVERS

ProtonTricks is for people who are running Linux as their operating system, it helps run the game on linux.

You do not need this. You just twant to get UE4SS mods working on your server so you can connect to it correct?

IN ORDER TO DO THAT YOU NEED THE WINDOWS BINARY TO RUN ON YOUR LINUX SERVER.

Go to console and see if this works:

# Create a directory for the server
mkdir -p ~/PalworldServer
cd ~/PalworldServer

# Download the Windows server files (AppID 2394010)
steamcmd +@sSteamCmdForcePlatformType windows +force_install_dir ~/PalworldServer +login anonymous +app_update 2394010 validate +quit

# Navigate to the binaries folder
cd ~/PalworldServer/Pal/Binaries/Win64

# Download UE4SS (Version 3.0.1 is standard, but check for updates)
wget https://github.com/UE4SS-RE/RE-UE4SS/releases/download/v3.0.1/UE4SS_v3.0.1.zip

# Unzip UE4SS.
# IMPORTANT: Files like dwmapi.dll and UE4SS.dll must sit directly next to PalServer.exe
unzip UE4SS_v3.0.1.zip -d .

# Clean up zip
rm UE4SS_v3.0.1.zip

# Edit the settings file (using sed for quick command line editing)
# Sets GuiConsoleEnabled to 0 and GuiConsoleVisible to 0
sed -i 's/GuiConsoleEnabled = 1/GuiConsoleEnabled = 0/' UE4SS-settings.ini
sed -i 's/GuiConsoleVisible = 1/GuiConsoleVisible = 0/' UE4SS-settings.ini

# Navigate to the Mods directory
cd ~/PalworldServer/Pal/Binaries/Win64/Mods

# Download the latest PalSchema (Check GitHub for the absolute latest version link if this is outdated)
wget https://github.com/Okaetsu/PalSchema/releases/download/v0.1.2/PalSchema-0.1.2.zip

# Unzip PalSchema (It usually contains a folder named 'PalSchema')
unzip PalSchema-0.1.2.zip

# Clean up zip
rm PalSchema-0.1.2.zip

# Return to the Win64 directory
cd ~/PalworldServer/Pal/Binaries/Win64

# Start the server (headless)
# The -useperfthreads -NoAsyncLoadingThread -UseMultithreadForDS args are standard performance flags
wine PalServer.exe -port=8211 -players=32 -useperfthreads -NoAsyncLoadingThread -UseMultithreadForDS
