Three-base limit, and a lot of irons in the fire. I'm not saying that it can't be done; it just seems like a weird way to balance the late game loop, especially when it's next to impossible to cover all your high-demand materials using semi-automated bases.
research at the research station makes electricity generation more efficient, makes oil extractors more efficient at producing oil, , and even makes everything use less electricity.
you can get oil from multiple pals, oil rigs, and people...
even without all that my previous game, before the 4.14 update was producing more oil then i needed off just two oil extractors.
granted getting started is a bit slow yes... but certainly doable.
Admittedly, research has not been a high priority for me thus far.

You need to progress in the PAL lab's power generation research to ensure an acceptable supply of power.

Hunt Helzephyr Lux in Sakuragima island to provide energy. Im using 5 and have excedent.
There's a spot on the southern desert plateau where your base can encompass some forest, two or three coal nodes and two oil nodes, with a skill fruit tree just outside. Six extractors it ain't, but when real estate is at a premium it works pretty well for me. Maybe less critical with constructable mining pits, I guess.
