(Hence why I've joked that if I go out and patent car ignition switches, I could then turn around and sue every car maker in the world and make billions instantly)
In truth, it's supposed to be something "innovative" and "novel" to be patented.
However, like you said, Legends Arceus's mount system is neither of those, as countless games have the same system.
Nintendo claims on a technicality that theirs is novel because you summon the mount to you instantly.
I'm not sure if other games do that or not.
Imagine that if Valve created vague, board-reaching patents about Left 4 dead, then not many horde shooters can be brought up and for us to enjoy them, that is to say, No Killing Floor, No World war z, No Deep rock galactic, No Helldiver2, etc.
And there is always some moron will state that "patents only hold up 20 years, it will expire eventually, anyway." The problem is how many 20 years do human have in their life? Even with advanced medical care, ppl's longevity is still around 80. Ppl have to work for a majority of their time and when they get old they can't do many things properly in comparison to their younger counterparts. Imagine playing your favorite game when you are 80 in ICU, because some stupid patents causing it decades ago.
That's why patent examination is supposed to be a conscientious and careful process, otherwise it just straight up ruins many ppl's life.
EDIT: Looks to me like Nintendo has won nothing, its more like Sony is getting involved and are afraid of nintendo and maybe suggested pocketpair slightly change how pals are brought onto the field. Either pocketpair are bending the knee cuz they're cowards, or Sony is being a bunch wimps who are afraid of nintendo, and asked for this change when it launched on their PS store. Either way, they both need to grow some balls and put that summoning animation back in, and stand up to Nintendo, because this looks like an admission of guilt. What a dumb move on pocketpair's part.
♥♥♥♥ NINTENDO! All they've been doing is making ♥♥♥♥♥♥ games in recent years, that include both Pokemon and Zelda. In fact, I'm going to go out today and buy a steam card and buy Palworld when its on sale, just to flip the bird at NIntendo, I absolutely can't stand those clowns.
unlike studio's like EA and Blizzard that see use as number's for $$$. i feel Nintendo see use has "sheep" or "zealots" for there church if i make sense. since they quip killing fan's content , being a massive annoyance to everyone or usually both (youtube, G mod, the smash fan base, the list go on and on).
honestly i rather be treated like number to be milk't and be left in peace if i do make fan content of XYZ.
fan content particularly the good one's is in my opinion the best complement a dev of a game can get. speaking with are wallet and time for the love of something.
Nintendo suit's don't sim to understand that and prefer to burn everything.
"you are gonna enjoy what WE create. AND NOTHING ELSE" and "we give lawsuit for breathing and jumping in a video game. oh and we all so own the color red"
isn't japan the country of honour? if so this is very ironic from Nintendo.
Nintendo is pushing for damages and they are putting a leash around Pocket with an injunction. Shame really... Nintendo has gone crazy - out of control!
Pocket may have to back off because they want to keep this game alive / running. They want this game to be better than Nintendo BS! Instead of wasting time in court and wasting money (which Nintendo is trying to do - rob every pennies they can), Pocket is going to change things within their game. It will take time. But at least... Palworld is not here to die.
That is what I thought, I know Japan has a high guilty verdict the case hasn't been going long enough either way to be concluded.
What's worse is that the patent expiration is determined from when the patent was filed and not when the 'subject' was created. So if game companies begin to get away with patenting preexisting game mechanics, it will be a fresh twenty year patent. Imagine if Nintendo decided to patent Z-Targeting.
(edit: apparently they did patent Z-targeting. U.S. Pat. No. 6,626,760)
Tbh, Nintendo has been pretty radio silent aside from saying they'd "look into it" and then years later popping up with 3 patents that form the basis of their suit. No one knows which of the 60 odd claims Palworld has or hasn't infringed upon... yet everyone is already preemptively calling for doomsday.
