If you want a base with pals that actually work, then you want better food. Better pals get hungrier faster, meaning they're going to spend the majority of their time running to the food box, eating a single berry, running back to their task to work for 5 seconds, and then getting hungry again.

Foods like salad, pizza, and minestrone not only provide useful work speed buffs, but provide far more satiety to keep pals fuller longer, meaning fewer trips to the food box.
Depends, do you want productivity or do you want to keep watching them go to the food box every 3 minutes?
Pals will eat every time their hunger hits 50%, if you're only giving them 1% food they will constantly be going to eat. Make salads, and pizza, it only takes a few in-game days to make 1000 and then you don't have to care for like a month. And they'll be productive for a lot longer each day. They'll only have to eat once per day or something instead of 50 times.
You just have them grow a ton of tomatoes and lettuce.
And then once in a while, have your Kindling Pal cook 150+ salads.
You can even set it for Pals to haul, and you can walk away and they'll handle their food while you're gone.

Im currently doing that, just seems like far less total food. 2 plots each, do i need more?
i need to restart this

It is far less food, and that's a good thing. Berries give 15 satiety, or baked berries for 21 satiety. Salad gives 84 satiety, meaning 4x more per meal. Fuller pals, and increased work speed, which also means faster planting, watering, and gathering of crops, and faster cooking of more salads, along with every other task in that base being boosted.

I use 4 wheat/ 4 tomato/ 4 lettuce with 2 Lyleens and 2 Jormintides in my main base.

Lyleen plants/harvest and Jorm waters. If you have them in a place where they can't reach the plantations, they'll work in place, which is faster. I use Helzephyr to move the food to a freezer. Doing this will take a moment, but it pays for itself quickly over time. I recommend forcing them to do one role each so that they never get distracted by anything else too.
After you've collected the first few salads, they'll eat them and be much more productive from then on. Well worth swapping imo.

If you lack space, build a farm in another base, like a base you use specifically for ore, coal, or oil. That way, it doesn't take a bunch of space and you can plant more crops. You can plant crops on top of foundations too, so you can make a big zone in the air for crops. Just travel back to that base when you need to restock food.
Better Harvesting skill results in better yields (you just need one tier 5 to get the maximum effect for all your crops), research in yield and growth speed also helps, and one single Prunelia will give up to a 50% yield bonus at max extraction, 2 or 3 Lullu will optimize growth speed. With Tier 5 harvesters, a maxed out Prunelia, and maxed out research every crop plot should yield 55 crops (I have seen a bug though where they're only yielding 15 when the crop is planted while I'm away from the base, so you may want to keep an eye on that too)

I personally Alternate between a setup of 4 tomato, 3 onion, 2 carrots and potatoes when I'm doing Minestrone production for food, and 7 tomato and lettuce when I'm doing Salad production (for money), 2 wheat and berries will run at all time for a mix of both profit and cake production.

Food is very important, at least in higher difficulty like Hard or Hardcore mode, since under a specific threshold (something around 25% nutrition value or less), you and/or your pals get a stat debuff until they eat to get above that threshold.

YES. FOOD IS POINTLESS! STARVE YOUR PALS TO DEATH! And when they are near death, throw an Egg in the middle of your base to watch them fight it out to the DEATH!
May The Best Chikipi Win!

No, Seriously, Food has a Nutrition Value when you look at it, the higher the nutrition, the more it will fill them up.

Say i feed my, lets say Petalia berries, her hunger isint gonna be restored much, due to low nutrional value, now if i feed her a mammoth steak, or whatever that pal is called, it will fill her up more. Some Pals also eat more than others, you can see how much they eat in their stats too.

i think they get hungier quicker also if you have them assigned to anything above "Normal" in the Monitoring Stand, but i havent tested that.

Id do chikipi poloture, 1 million coins is 5k ore, and 1 million coins gets you 15k chikipi poloteries (I'm not sure) then with your berry farm, you make all of the poloutreys, and there you go; put it in the feed box and set the work to hard or extra hard. (With a good amount of high quality medicine and hotubs.)

Like other people have said, better foods let pals work more efficiently, especially once you get ones with other effects like salad's workspeed boost. Keep in mind too that better foods will also improve your farming productivity, so it's a positive feedback loop.

Eventually though, you do reach a breakpoint where it's not really worth investing in better food. Salad is pretty much that breakpoint, so it's what everyone uses.

Just try to operate a base with multiple pals with berries. Salad imo is one of the best foods as its only two resources and provides workspeed buff. I personally just use salads, used to be pizzas but they are way more work to make and barely any better or worse.

I swapped up when I noticed my miners were pausing literally every 10-20 seconds to go eat. Berries just do not provide enough satiation to be worth it lategame. Salad is annoying to set up, but once you've got two lettuce/tomato farms down and tier 3-4 waterers/seeders/harvesters, the farm runs itself. All you need to do is remember to craft a thousand or so salads every few hours.
