And yes could also be a bug, I've seen crop plots randomly have a hitbox the size of the entire map (not even hyperbole, the hitbox extended out to X and Y = infinity in 3 directions, unmodded btw).
I don't even get the outline of the structure to build inside so I think it's a bug rather than an issue with the hitbox. I've just managed to do a workaround by removing the foundation floor in my building and then when standing directly on the dirt it allows me to then build the chest inside on foundations next to where I'm standing.It's a PITA to try to arrange so I'm having to build them a bit wonky (which triggers my OCD). Seems to be the only way currently that I can build them inside though.
It is annoying so you have to destroy the floor tile above, build the refined metal chest, then put the floor structure back OR make sure you have 2 or 3 wall tiles between the floor and ceiling.
