Wooden pillars as an early-game fence?

I just tried this yesterday. Made a base in beginner area with a new character. Used a wooden building with as a gatehouse. I then painstakingly placed an endless series of wooden pillars as as fence around my base and it worked wonders. The mounts pass right through it with no trouble. Keeps my pals in the base working and keeps wild ones out without waiting several levels for wooden gates and defensive walls which are an eyesore. Having a level 38 raid boss roam through my base always made me leery. It looks like a series of wooden poles driven into ground.
