not sure why they don't go to it automatically, but its really annoying
Or if it's bugged, consider rebuilding the research station, placing the pals back into the box and pulling them back out, reloading the game, or even verifying the game files.
In the meantime, you must use the Monitoring Stand to assign a pal to work at it. Or, if the workload you're putting on your pals is low enough one of them will eventually work on it while they have downtime between other jobs. For instance, if I don't have anything going in my kitchen or in the forge my Jormungtide Ignis will work on the Lab because he's not valid for any other work, but the moment any other job becomes available he'll quit and do that first.
I threw a level 3 mining pal on, and it imediatly got to work
Keep in mind it was SPECIFICLY telling me that it required "mining level 1"
The only reason you would put a research station in your other base is to jump start the research because of resource required.
They will research automatically without being assigned, but research is a least priority option. If there is anything else they could be doing instead, they'll do that.
Now, I noticed one of mine didn't straight away get to work, but he did in the end. Also, ensure that if you're using a large Pal, there's enough headroom, otherwise they won't be able to reach it.
