i can't do ANY of the research
like, having buffs for general stuff is great, but for some reason i can't even get pals to recognise the station if i pick them up and throw them at it

like, what the ♥♥♥♥ is the point?

you can assign the pals to the station using a monitoring stand
not sure why they don't go to it automatically, but its really annoying

Use the monitoring station to assign them to it.

Or if it's bugged, consider rebuilding the research station, placing the pals back into the box and pulling them back out, reloading the game, or even verifying the game files.

Yeah, for some reason Pals won't recognize the Research Station as a workplace they can be assigned to when thrown, probably because it's the only structure in the game that has the type of required work change depending on what's being researched. Certainly a bug that will be smoothed out eventually.

In the meantime, you must use the Monitoring Stand to assign a pal to work at it. Or, if the workload you're putting on your pals is low enough one of them will eventually work on it while they have downtime between other jobs. For instance, if I don't have anything going in my kitchen or in the forge my Jormungtide Ignis will work on the Lab because he's not valid for any other work, but the moment any other job becomes available he'll quit and do that first.

Ok so I think I might have found an answer. I was trying to do mining research, and all of the "mining level 1" pals were ignoring it, even when thrown

I threw a level 3 mining pal on, and it imediatly got to work

Keep in mind it was SPECIFICLY telling me that it required "mining level 1"

Oh yeah, the research is separated into tiers, and you need a pal of the same tier or higher to work on it.

Ya research is so low on Pal Priority. Monitoring Stand should also allow you to set Priority for each Pal, not just yes or no to do, but what of their workload is prioritised. Also, Monitoring stand should let you suspend a building, say Stone, but I still want them to do Coal and Sulfur, without having to delete the Stone.

The research gets done so fast unless you are starting a new character from scratch that you can just use your raid base or something and the only workable buildings are the research stations and they prioritize and finish it very fast.

The only reason you would put a research station in your other base is to jump start the research because of resource required.

They will research automatically without being assigned, but research is a least priority option. If there is anything else they could be doing instead, they'll do that.
I used my spare base slot to just throw a feed box and 10 research stations in a flat area, then deployed a bunch of researchers. worked real well

Do you mean the research station? Make sure the right Pal skill is there, so if you're researching Handiwork, have a Pal with at least 2-3 ideally as a sole trait. Use V and throw them close to the research station.

Now, I noticed one of mine didn't straight away get to work, but he did in the end. Also, ensure that if you're using a large Pal, there's enough headroom, otherwise they won't be able to reach it.
