How do you do anything in wild zones?
I want to catch shadowbeak so I can have an actually good flying mount, but the drones are so frustrating to work around. Is there a way to get rid of them I just missed or are just supposed to be miserable?

The drones are the pidf replacements for the sanctuaries that actually do their job well.

Also quivern is a pretty decent flyer now due to their speed buffs. Not as fast or as powerful as shadowbeak, but much more available.
You need to dodge them and if you watch their pathing a bit it's usually not too bad.

You will need to keep a decent flying mount ready in case they get a bit erratic when you go for a pal to capture.

I think they're pretty awful. Having to slowly die for not wiggling around their pathing or accepting that some pals just can't be caught is not fun at all.

I know how to deal with them. It's just really lame to the point I'm convinced I missed something. No way anyone is dumb enough to put these things in the wild zones and not have some way to circumvent them.
Fly high. Throw spheres down from above. That's what I do. I didn't bother catching the wildlife pals until endgame though so its pretty easy when you have Sol/Ancient spheres.
If you don't want to deal with the drones, you could use Selyne. She gets holy burst and moonbeam, she flies fast, and she doesn't fall in the water and drown from running out of stamina. She can probably help you get shadowbeak when you are ready to try on the drones.

This lol. I think people are used to going there and being able to just bulldoze any opposition meant to keep you out. Now the forces meant to keep you out actually do a good job of it and you have to figure out how you want to go about getting pals and whatnot from the reservations. It's high risk high reward.
I never had a single issue with the drones, and only ever got attacked by them when I purposely let them "catch" me. And I barely had to do any avoiding drones either.

Are people really that troubled by them?

I would much rather have boss like enemies than severely over leveled drones. It's not even about the wild zones being hard. It's that sneaking around the drones is really boring and makes wild zones miserable to be in.
I'm seeing now I missed nothing and the wild zones just suck. What a shame
Wildlife sanctuaries are easy.

Get a Suzaku or failing that Vanwyrm will work. Get a sniper or homing palsphere module, a Mercy Ring, and a good gun that's accurate at long ranges.

Fly above the height where the drones patrol - they cannot see anything that's not in the cone of their searchlight, and that only ever searches below them.

Find the Pal you want to capture, shoot them until Mercy Hit activates, and then beanball them with a sphere. Repeatedly sphere them until you capture them.

Drones don't care if a Pal's getting shot right in front of them - they only care if they see you specifically, and they can't see you if you're above them. So long as you don't accidentally tag a drone with a shot, you're completely fine.

Drones always follow set patrol routes. Once you learn these routes, dodging drones should be child's play because you can always see their cone of vision.

What do you mean? I can catch pals in them. It's just not fun
Is it not possible to destroy them? (I haven't tried)

It is possible to destroy them but you're not supposed to. they have like 900k health and are level 80. They'll shred you unless you cheese them.
You can cheese them by pulling agro then exploiting the drone weapon's ability to damage beyond walls. You hide in the cave as near to the wall as possible so your drone continues to deal them damage. Eventually you'll destroy them but I'm not sure if they come back.
You get no loot from them and I'm not sure if you get xp. The person I saw demonstrating this exploit was max level.
They honestly aren't that bad, so long as you have a fast pal (ideally with flinch immunity passive, but that isn't needed). I'll run around in the third sanctuary just catching things with all 3 aggroed on me no problem.

A good well-bred Chillet is enough to basically handle anything they throw at you.
