If you love decorating, getting mods that adds more pieces to building is essential.
If you love building and not hopping from base to base, the base expander mod is essential.
If you love randomizers and want to play with your favorite pals without waiting for levels, then the tech unlocker mod is essential. (I have this one, and I edited the file to unlock all the saddles instead of all the tech)
If you have problems running the game because of the fog of war, the fog removal mod is essential.
Ideally, you start up the game first and if you feel that something is missing that's not in the game, then you go look up mods that fixes your problem.
