Nintendo's Patent came out after Palworld was released
https://www.twitter.com/theboredboar/status/1836624678066290705

"Everyone talking about the Palworld vs Pokemon debacle, look here:

Pokemon and Nintendo filed for patents to the mounting system and the throw ball to summon and fight system on MAY of 2024, which is AFTER Palworld launched.

This is a very low blow to do."

(EDIT:) he was wrong and corrected himself. The patent was back in filed in 2021

This is genuinely messed up..

it's just like them... if they spent 50% of the money on games that they spend on lawyers, maybe there wouldn't be a problem xD

Wouldn't this clash with atlus megami tensei series though?

and a ton of other games, people hav ementioned, digimon, yokai watch, temtem, just to name a few. And since the patent just says to catch creatures and use them to help you fight, you're looking at games like ark too.

Yeah, not really a smart idea to throw a net that wide to catch one developer. Heck, even disney made a monster catching game: Spectrobes.

The only case they could have is storage and summoning since you have an example of mounting and catching things with balls dating hundreds of years ago in the real world (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolas). But there s a lot of other eamples of creature catching games that use the storage > release > fight system, Shin Megami Tensei comes to mind.

Spectrobes was so underrated

These patents would never hold up outside japan. They are both japanese companies so that's all that matters sadly. Pokemon wasn't even the first monster catching game. Many other games had flying mounts way before Nintendo ever even thought of them in a game.

i find it crazy they didn't patent catching monsters 30 years ago when they created it, or even after gen 2. 2021 seems a bit late and also waiting like 9 months to finally sue seems a bit late.

And of course Megami Tensei was the first monster collection game out there, with the initial installment being released on September 11th, 1987. Without it, not only would Pokémon nor Digimon and others like them exist, neither would Tamagotchi and other virtual pet brands.

Though to be fair Giga Pets should have never existed to begin as they were the Tiger Electronics of the virtual pet genre.

They didn't though, Atlus was the progenitor of the genre. Pokémon was maybe the second or third IP to take a leaf from their book. Likely the second given that Gen I was released in Japan on February 27th, 1996.

Nine whole years for Nintendo to ape their shtick. They don't get to claim to be responsible for the creation of the genre solely because the first few instances of it utilized their hardware, what with Megami Tensei II being released on March 18th 1994 and Megami Tensei: if - which is in turn what lead to Persona - being released on October 28th, 1994.

But then again I don't think Nintendo has had an original idea that was both marketable and profitable since the Video Game Crash of 1983. Least not a good one that wasn't peddled to morons with more money than common sense. Nope, they just take credit the work of studios who use them as a publisher and then proceed to ♥♥♥♥ up the place with nonsense and overpriced plastic.

you ppl are fking stupid. The patent date is not retroactive so games made before the patent date cant be targeted. Palworld sadly should have had better ppl look into this because like the nemesis system and GTA's traffic algorithms, these are original protected concepts. Nintendo claimed the "pokemon style" before Palworld was made.

Craftopia is PocketPair's other game and it has the same mechanic 100+ pets and "monster prisms" to catch. Nintendo probably won't do anything about that game

Craftopia has many of the same mechanics on Sept 4, 2020 over a year before the Dec 2021 patent from Pokemon. I'm pretty sure this Lawsuit is DOA.
