The lawsuit is going to set a terrible precedent.
A certain multi-billion yen corporation trying to patent "Monster Taming/Catching" sets a horrible precedent even if they lose, and that such litigation is even going through the courts at all is absurd.

Also Nintendie ALREADY TRIED SOMETHING LIKE THIS with the Tear Ring Saga and the TRPG genre, which they promptly lost because wanting to be the owner of a genre was considered a monopoly.

This lawsuit against pocketpair is just another case of Nintendie being a patent/copyright troll and bullying anyone they can get away with, which sets an awful precedent as we already see how much of an absolute mess IP law is in the USA because of this, and now thanks to Nintendie its going to be ever more of a thing in Japan, too.

hopefully if they lose enough they'll learn its a waste of money.

the fact they are seemingly only doing this because of Palworlds success reeks of foul play. Temtem, Coromon, Nexomon all go untouched, hell temtem even gets a switch.

Nintendo winning is a bad omen, even if your not a fan of palworld

Disney and Sony and many others do similar things as well already, Nintendo is being a patent troll and a corporate bully. A shame that this is how things are these days, even the slightest hint of any sort of competition (and if anything, this is probably moreso spurred by the deal with Sony for merch, and the upcoming Switch 2/Pokemon ZA), and a corporation will lose it and do stuff like this.

It is an incredibly scummy thing to do, even if it does fail as it most likely will.

if they win, they kill innovation in gaming, because other megacaps will push to patent their cash cow mechanics as well and aggressively enforce them to kill indie games using the same. No innovation means no competition, no competition means AAA studios can make whatever the ♥♥♥♥ they want without accountability until people stop buying their games. Which they will - which in turn kills gaming until the patents are released or expire. All of which will need to be factored into the final decision in the courts, if there are indeed laws against monopoly in/affecting the gaming industry.

Honestly, I don't think they stand a chance of winning in this unless they're after hyper-specific ♥♥♥♥ like the fact that Palworld also uses balls as the capture mechanic, and even if they are, there's then the matter of whether or not Pocketpair has harmed pokemon's IP/business by using them. Which - as numerous hardcore pokemon fans spouted ad infinitum during the first month or so after the EA launch - it hasn't.

In other words, Nintendo is trying to patent, not just videogames, but the very concept of any sort of simulation itself.
How in the world is any of this legal? The japanese legal system is a mystery, that's for sure.

As far im aware the "court case" will be happening in Japan, not in USA.

There are laws in Japan that make it illegal to talk bad about any company. This is how sheltered japanese businessmen are. None of Nintendo's action are surprising in the slightest.

I hope Poketpair spends all the money they got from Palworld to hire the best lawyer they can get to kick Nintendorks ass to the moon to teach those pricks a lesson they'll never forget.

The funniest part is, the patent basically describes the mechanics only as they exist in pokemon legends arceus and technically scarlet and violet

Im honestly more surprised they arent throwing in aspects clearly pulled from the last two zelda games

Palworld was released before the patent was granted. So worst case I could see happening is if they need to pay a license to have this kind of game play,

But even that maybe not.

Mental processes cannot be patented. The rules of a game cannot be patented (unless there is a sufficiently inventive concept to “transform” the rules into patent-eligible subject matter … but what does that even mean?). The patent-eligible subject matter exception to 35 U.S.C.

you are quoting US patent law. this case was filed in Japan under Japanese patent law. 35 U.S.C does not apply.

from what i see, just like citra case, they probably want to settle this out of court, and if it does goes to court, they probably will dragg it as long as they can to drain palword development fund

it's wild just how much Nintendo hates fun and letting the consumers be happy...

they wont let us have official merch, they wont let us have fake merch, they dont even let us have merch that is just loosely based on stuff they do....

Honestly, Nintendo well and truly need to LOSE everything they have.
If they wont let us have anything then they dont deserve to continue existing.
