Edit: The moment devs start patenting game mechanics and suing over them is the moment the gaming industry really starts to plummet. As if the micro-transactions and endless paid DLC weren't enough, now we have companies trying to keep others from even implementing same or similar game mechanics. That's an absolutely wild thing to support.
See it that way. You can't kill a pokemon with an AK-47 in nintendo's world. The company got jealous of game's success and it is their only way to get their so called "money" they won't get because they can't make fun games and do childish crap.
The fact that "design" is close does make the game look like identical is completely normal, they didn't copy anything at all and made their own original design that looks better.
So now you telling us, that terraria is a minecraft's copy? Typical nintendo fan
Lets put aside the lazy "development" of games, since that is mostly consumers fault for buying the same game over and over again. And your statement about Palworld copying off characters, which isnt untrue, but its highly ironic considering how many characters (and gameplay mechanics) Nintendo ripped from games like DQ or SMT to make Pokemon. And my favourite stuff like "Palword ripping the concept of wolf - WOLF the freakin animal - from pokemon".
I have to remind you this lawsuit has nothing to do with character design. Even the famous army of Nintedo´s rabbid lawyers couldnt find enough evidence of outright ripping off characters, otherwise this would be Copyright infringement lawsuit instead of just Patent Infringement.
There are two main reasons why i believe Nintendo shouldnt win, not even because of Palworld, just for the sake of gaming in general:
1) The patent they claim Palworld infringed upon was patented months after Palworld was released. Palworld officialy released february, the patent was submitted in April, patented in May. Now imagine you make product inspired by something that has been fully legal to use for decades, only for some company to suddenly claim its their own exclusive property and force you to shut down half a year later. Like if Mercedes now claimed sole exclusivity for cars, since their creator invented first one (putting aside the fact that Daimler indeed had the car patented in like 1885).
2) The patent is so vague that if they succeed with it, nothing can stop them from suing over 70% of games. "Thrown object that affects actor in virtual field" is pretty much everything from pokebal to Fireball or Frag Grenade. And if you check properly, this year they also patented stuff like game media or storage. Once again, if they win, nothing can stop them for going after any RPG/Shooter developer they want (especially small ones that cant afford to feed army of lawyers).
Also making similar games is in no way bad for market. Imagine if every company behaved like this since the begining of games. We would have like 50 titles tops, with each title having to wait 20 years for patent to pass. And no, Pokemon would not be among them. In reality the first company who would patent leveling in general would screw entire genre over for decades.
Lastly: in reality Palword has no chance of anyhow endangering Nintendo and Pokemon Company, since they dont even need to make games anymore. Just the sheer brand recognition and royalties coming from it are gold mine itself (like Hello Kitty). The only reason why this is happening are combination of corporate greed and probably statement to calm down the crying sweatlords that keep sending them daily mails.
If that's the case then nintendo should shut down because they copied some digimon.... and vice versa for digimon too cuz they also copied.....
Grow up, EVER SINGLE game, movie, tv show, song etc etc has "copied" ideas/content/themes from other products, it is EXTREMELY hard to come up with new ideas, only slightly varying thigns of what we've already had, welcome to the world.
if nintendo win this law suit it sets bad precedent that will push and destroy so many indie teams ideas because everything is copied and only rich big fat companies can compete, aka ur be giving even more monopoly for ppl like ubisoft/ea to keep opvercharging for underdeveloped games because they could shut down ppl making anything similar.
actual smooth brained ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and if u think thats good for any industry then ur lost.
btw, u do know things like the windscreen wipers on cars at patented, so how come many different companies can make them???????? because so long as they get to the same end product on their own, any resemblance means ♥♥♥♥ all. only complete copies or using protected data/property makes it illegal. (aka they would of needed to import pokemon models then edit from there for this to be even close)
