This Steam version worked for me, I had the same error.
NOTE! Don't mess around randomly in the Registry Editor
Steam version:
- Open run menu (Windown Key + R)
- type 'regedit', hit enter to run
- There are many folders with drop down lists
- Look for look for them in this order: HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Explorer -> Shell Folders
- Within shell folders you will find many "files", also known as "keys"
- Look for a file/key called "Personal"
- Under the "Data" header it will give you a file location for the "Personal" file/key
- This location MUST be in the C:\ drive documents, not the one-drive documents, not some other hard-drive
- Now right click the "Personal" file/key -> Modify -> Set the "Value Data" to your C:\ drive document folder, e.g. C:\Users\YOURUSERNAMEHERE\Documents
- Next up scroll a bit down the list again and find "User Shell Folders"
- Within that folder, repeat the exact same process, modify the "Personal" file/key the same way
- Now just close the Registry Editor
- Now you can open up your game and it should work, if not, try to restart now after this process and it should hopefully work for you
Yeah... doesn't work. regedit was still in my runmenu from the last few times I did this with nothing working afterwords.
Darn... thats really unfortunate, personally it worked for me, I genuinely don't have a clue what else it could be about, sorry </3
