EDIT: What about changing balls to something else like a quill that's writing a magic contract in the air and the progress of the contract reflects the % of being captured visually? Normally the ball shakes and a percentage to catch number fluctuates visually.

why do you link a book with wizardry? a book can be simply a tech device that suck in and send out the pals, dematerialize and backwards like a teleport device in star trek.
I think having it be a cube where a light comes out and the pal materialises from it fits better with the whole cyber tech looking world
people are complaining because they downgraded it, but if they could keep it as a good mechanic without violating the patent, then they could iterate on the mechanic and patent it themselves.
