I've always thought of it as us being the 6th Pal though.
Also after everything that has happened I am 1110% convinced Nintendo would come after PocketPair for copying their "teams of 6"
True, Nintendo would try that... which is sad and kinda cheap, but hey, they like money way too much.
I just think that with the 2 mounts, 1 main, 1 back-up attacker/passive (collar) the utility is kinda hard to cover with only one slot left.
Plus if you plan your team out to be optimized for utility and medium combat ability, you have to sacrifice either mobility, or just can't use some of the awesome pals you just love.
I just feel like one extra slot for the utility would fix that problem, since two pals are more than enough to cover all gaps in the teams abilities
Mid game flyers can easily fill in the backup combat pal role and late game there will be no real need for a ground mount save for dungeons.
My team comp is
1. Flyer who doubles as backup combat pal
2. Ground mount who doubles as mercy hit to help catch pals
3. Glider pal for mobility in combat so not used as an attacker
4. Main combat
5. Another combat pal or a utility pal
For utility pals I tend to go with digtoise or tombat. Digtoise for mining. Tombat is used when trying to get my 12 catches on every pal or when I want to condense vixy.
With my current setup I have 2 pals who almost never see combat and I can just swap in a good combat pet when I need to if I am taking on a hard enemy.
