Of Shrooms and Sanity
How do you want to play Palworld? Some people want to be nice as possible to their pals. I can understand that. But I'm in it for the meme. I wanna give all my new buddies purpose, and that purpose is making me some fat stacks. But here I faced a problem. Harsh working conditions are too draining on all my friends. I can get everyone back into shape with all my meds and food. People complain a lot less with a mouth full of cotton candy. But that wasn't the goal. Way too much effort on my part when I'd rather be out exploring and harassing the local indigenous instead. And then I found this weird relaxasaurus with unbaked pizza for a hat. This might change the game.

So anyways, I did a lot of testing trying to nail down how sanity worked. I'll post the findings here, along with what I got out of it, but short version is still that without a considerable amount of careful base building, it's probably best to stick to Normal Work mode. Although if you can get a large hot spring for every pal fairly close to their work area, Hard Work mode is better. Also, my tests were only for a max of 3 fully condensed Shroomer Noct. If you're doing something like 50 pals per a base, it's very likely worth adding more and using harsher work modes.

To start this off, here are some tests on sanity depletion. The following tests are from 100 sanity to 90 without work. This is likely slightly off, as sanity dropped to 99 almost immediately upon being put in base. Consider all Shroomer as fully condensed.

Lastly, disclaimer: Did this for fun. If I didn't, would have tested more variations. For example, large beds, multiple food buffs, and more stuff in different work modes. As is, I'm lazy, and this is already kinda long. And consider timers w/ a grain of salt. Just me pushing a button.

Hardest Work Mode, not working
Standard: 1 minute 3 seconds
228/400 satiety: 1 minute 3 seconds
174/350 satiety: 1 minute 3 seconds (Under half satiety does not change)
66/400 satiety (hungry): 31 seconds (Hungry status appears to double sanity loss)
Asleep, no bed: 42 seconds
Asleep, straw bed: 1 minute 34 seconds
Asleep, fluffy bed:
1 Shroomer: 1 minute 15 seconds
1 Shroomer (self): 1 minute 15 seconds (Shroomer is effected by its own passive)
2 Shroomer: 1 minute 30 seconds
3 Shroomer: 1 minute 55 seconds

Interesting note, having a team pal out and working on base will be effected by Work Mode work speed buff. But it will not lose sanity.

Hard Work Mode, not working
Standard: 3 minutes 8 seconds
1 Shroomer: 3 minutes 41 seconds
2 Shroomer: 4 minutes 30 seconds
3 Shroomer: 5 minutes 48 seconds

Normal Work Mode
Did not test. Got bored, and figured normal mode is already stable in a fully
operational base.

Following tests are of sanity depletion while working. Namely, while cutting wood. Timer began when sanity ticked down and finished after 10 sanity depleted. All tests w/ Shroomers were done w/ work speed passives and salad buff. I do not believe this effected sanity depletion, since the non-Shroomer test seemed about as expected despite having no salad or work passives.

Hardest Work Mode, logging
Standard: 36 seconds
1 Shroomer: 41 seconds
2 Shroomer: 51 seconds
3 Shroomer: 1 minute 5 seconds

Hard Work Mode, logging
Standard: 53 seconds
1 Shroomer: 1 minute 2 seconds
2 Shroomer: 1 minute 16 seconds
3 Shroomer: 1 minute 34 seconds

Normal Work Mode, logging
Standard: 1 minute 47 seconds
1 Shroomer: 2 minutes 2 seconds
2 Shroomer: 2 minutes 31 seconds
3 Shroomer: 3 minutes 12 seconds

Testing satiety loss. Tests begin when sanity ticks down and end after 5 satiety are depleted. Tests were done twice for each starting at high satiety.

Normal Work Mode, logging: 38 seconds
Normal Work Mode, not working: 1 minute 15 seconds
Hard Work Mode, logging: 31 seconds
Hard Work Mode, not working: 1 minute 1 second
Hard Work Mode, big hot spring: No satiety loss

Pals attempt to eat at 50% satiety. Also, breaks seem to last 1 minute and 30 seconds. (Not entirely sure of accuracy, as I timed this for multiple pals, but only in Hard mode.) Pals refusing to work seem to last longer than a normal break, though they will go to hot springs and recover sanity. At least 1 pal recovered around 60 sanity from the big hot spring. However, pal breaks seem to start the moment they have them. If it takes them time to get to a hot spring, they will recover less sanity.

Now for a more complete testing, closer to my end goal of using 3 fully condensed Shroomer on a logging site. Testing was done with salad in food bowl. "Maxed start" refers to full sanity, satiety, and a salad buff.

Hard Work Mode, 5k wood, 1 big spring, maxed start: 36 minutes.
Pals sometimes missed hot spring breaks due to others taking the slot. 1 pal dropped to red.

Hard Work Mode, 2.5k wood, 2 big springs, 2 pals in yellow sanity: 16 minutes 15 seconds

Normal Work Mode, 2.5k wood, 2 big springs, maxed start: 18 minutes 17 seconds

Hardest Work Mode, 2.5k wood, 2 big springs, maxed start: 14 minutes 48 seconds
Towards end, 1 pal hit zero sanity and got an ulcer.

Hardest Work Mode, 2.5k wood, 3 small spring, maxed start: 16 minutes 18 seconds
Small springs did not fully restore sanity. All pals approaching yellow and beginning to throw fits more often than taking breaks. Throwing fits means sleeping on fluffy bed.

Hardest Work Mode, 2.5k wood, 3 big hot springs, maxed start: 15 minutes 12 seconds
Believe one got depressed and multiple times approached red sanity. This does not seem sustainable.

The following tests were a bit different. They each had 3 big hot springs. Tests were done with a maxed start to 2.5k wood, immediately followed by another test to the next 2.5k wood. And to follow that up, a test for roughly 15 minutes of leaving the base.

Hard Work Mode
Test 1: 16 minutes 38 seconds
Test 2: 17 minutes 18 seconds
Test 3: 2885 wood after 15 minutes. All pals above 80%, 2 chilling out in springs.

Normal Work Mode
Test 1: 17 minutes 5 seconds
Test 2: 18 minutes 30 seconds
Test 3: 2594 wood after roughly 15 minutes and 25 seconds. Pals all near max sanity.

And that's that. Was rather disappointing. Though I still might give hard work mode a go if I can really nail the base layout. I will probably not be doing any testing posts in the near future.
