Second base was a mining base at a place where there's a ton of natural ores, not as important now because you can just build the ore building.
Third base Oil Extractor, which by itself uses up a lot of electricity. So the rest of it is ranches, farms and breeding. There's some coal and sulfur near by, which is nice, but won't matter soon because I can put down the coal/sulphur extractor buldings.
As for base design you want to minimize travel time with your pals. Food placed in a general area is ok, but it's best to have food available directly beside where they're working, as well as beds. Make sure you have clear pathways to minimize any travel time between jobs.
It's easier to manage if you have specific industries at each base, instead of mixing, as I mentioned above
It's usually a tug-of-war between the following factors:
* How much open space it has
* Are there resources within the base's bounds that your pals might automatically collect
* Are there nearby-but-not-in-bounds resources you might not mind manually collecting
* Is the location useful as a teleport point otherwise
* How secure is it against raids
* Does it look cool
My first base is usually right by the fast travel point "Grassy Behemoth Hills"; it has some ore, a regenerating chest, and a reasonable amount of room nearby. As a bonus, raids have a chance of spawning on the hill overlooking it and not being able to make it to the base (not always though). I might pull up the base later, but it serves well for a lot of the game.
A few other places I find cool:
* -82, 193 - No resources, but it's on top of a huge circular pillar that's almost exactly the size of base limits, and is entirely safe from raids. Drop your base marker right in the middle and divide it into usage quadrants. Great views, but if you're doing stuff nearby and your flying pal gets knocked out, you're going to have a really tough time getting back up. Has a meteor/supply drop spawn nearby.
* -258, -362 - A really pretty mountain lake area. Safe from raids (they spawn but can't pathfind their way to you, and you can fly down with a flame bird and roast them while they're walking against the cliff if you want some lols and goodies). Not that big, but I like to stick the palbeds around the lake. I do my breeding here; there's just enough room for 3 breeding pens. A bit of mining is possible too.
* -210, 250 - Quartz. Minimbase only. Very cold - you need cold resistant armour.
* -156, -90 - Coal. Minibase only. Enemies wander in, it's really hard to defend.
* -854, -455 - Oil. Minibase only. Hard to defend. I haven't used this one yet, just found a good spot.
* -743, -444 - Sulphur. Minibase only. Hard to defend.
* If you are willing to fiddle with it, you can place bases on the rocks that are part of the wild preserves, even in the illegal zones. It's hard to find the right placement, but keep working on it and you'll find a way to make it work
It's really cool how you can put bases almost anywhere; there are quite a lot of other good options.
