Mounted combat is terrible
"Holy Ship! You can ride the Pals and do combat?! That sounds amazing!"

Sadly the reality is that it is far easier to just let the pals do their thing and you sit back and take cheap shots at the enemy. The whole riding a Pal thing just does not work for combat, it is impossible to target the enemy, judge distance of enemy and gauge whether the enemy is in range of your attack from the viewpoint given, especially when you are both moving.

Either change the view during combat to Pal's eye view or have 'locked on' or 'in range' appear when your attack might actually hit the opponent. Something to make it more fun and less like you are wrestling with an oiled pig.

For such a big part of the game it just seems like it is terribly implemented.

Or maybe it is just me and I need to "git gud' or whatever?

IMO you need to adjust the pal's equipped skills for mounted combat, because some are easier or harder to manually aim (e.g. good luck landing Spine Vine, but it's a lot of fun lining up Blast Cannon to kill 5 enemies at once). Skills with long cooldowns work better on a mount because you'll probably want to manually shoot things a bunch anyway (many mounts give an elemental effect to any shots you fire while mounted) and the recharge period gives you time for that, plus it means less time spent aiming skills and more time spent doing other stuff.

I havent been on n awhile (waiting for more updates but might play some soon) but I didnt have much issue with riding pal attacks. It made it easier to avoid enemy attacks with a strong pall while using their abilities to their best.

That said, I remember swapping out some moves that felt awkward to use while riding, so that may be your problem.

Well obviously some of the attacks that pals do are really good and some are really bad. That is where you come in and chose which you like and use those. A fully leveled pal will have a few extra and you can select which you want to use. On my Beakon, I actually switch back to using the air cannon for the LMB. Even though it is fairly low damage it is the easiest to aim, has the quickest to reload, and stuns the pal making it good for doing a capture.

I have no problem aiming after I changed the sights to be bigger and a different color.

You also can't use the Ring of Mercy with your pal if you are not mounted.

I see videos of people doing boss fights not mounted. In that case I can see the advantage, in many other cases, I find mounted to be more fun at least, if not the best method.

main reason for mounted combat is it has different cooldown than when theyre loose. so u can be mounted launch all attacks and get down let it attack while you shoot. climb back on and attack again. its not the best but it works. some moves much easier to aim than other try out ones that work for you. also change the color of the aim reticle in the setting to something more visible

I used to think that as well. It wasn't until I got a good end game mount that I was able to get the hang of it. Once I did, I went back and discovered that the earlier pals weren't bad per se, they were bad for learning the ropes, at least for me. When I got my first Frostallion Noct is when I really started to play around with mounted combat, but still didn't favor it. Then once I got a perfect speed Frostallion Noct, then it all fell in to place and I love mounted combat. And as I've been lvling up my army I've been playing around with lots of them. Some have some annoying quirks, like with Quivern or Blazamut it's hard to aim your gun on them unless you are aiming to the side or behind you. But outside of little things like that, I basically never got off my mount anymore unless I'm going after Jetragon or Paldius & Necromus. For basically everything else, I keep ridding.

And if I brought Shadowquick, I don't get off to fight Paldius & Necromus either.

The best part about fighting mounted is that the attacks don't share a cool down. If you use up all your attacks and get off, the pal will go through them again. When he's done, you hop back on and cycle through them again. Rinse and repeat, that's how you get the most damage out of it.

Definitely this.

The first thing you need to understand is that you can use your gun while mounted. Make sure it is equipped and readied, then hold LT to aim. For most mounts you'll then aim at your target, and the aim-assist is tuned siily-high so there is no excuse for missing. You can fire while moving too.
If you're on a ground mount the situation isn't optimal, but you can fire off your skills then reposition quickly to let them recharge.
Mounted combat on FLYING mounts however is insanely effective. Most enemies never look up. You can use something like a single-shot rifle or a rocket launcher from the back of a flying mount and you have all the time in the world to line up your shot since they almost certainly won't notice you if you're up in the air. A lot of enemies can't even attack you up there, while you can attack them with complete freedom.
