This game, to me, seems best if you enter with the wonder and curiosity of a small child. If you can't do that, it will limit your experience. Not that you can't still have a great experience, but I think the devs really intended for us to be like little kids and see things and want to go there for the sake of it. Usually doing so is rewarded.
EDIT: To be fair to the Devs, to make those some of the highest peaks in the game, I'm fairly sure they didn't have much choice but to make one side basically just a sheer drop. Not without quadrupling it's already rather large size.
EDiT: The point i am trying to make is that it is not Satisfactory - the video game. All your explortion boils down to "Oh, i found secret pssage between 2 mountains and it has.... an effigy." 10 minutes later - "oh I found another paassage and it has.... another black market merchant"
I'm sure in late game when you have a high speed flying mount its not a problem but the game's exploration aspect just isn't fun because of that. Otherwise I really enjoy the game
But some of the flat empty plains kinda sucks ngl..
But, I can understand I'm not a typical gamer or person in general.
And also I think a lot of it is as Rivus said, it's to accommodate for a large number of people in multiplayer.
Probably lots of reasons, like multiplayer, but also for those that like exploring.
What gets me is always the starting area's being so far away from your starting area. You used to be able to re-spawn at any of them but I see that was changed at least single player wise.
It makes sense in multiplayer but its funny when you run over a new island only to realise you are 20 levels above it and the island could have been beaten over awhile ago with easier to beat bosses then the first boss you run into as they are around the level of the island so you just land and beat them up without effort.
But yes, of course, multiplayer wise with many players having many starting locations is good and gives more options.
As for the rest, because the game gives you options to speed up your flying mount and gives so many flying mount options, the bigger the world the better. Gives even more reasons to farm up a great flyer to be used for exploration.
Or just... use a hangyu and grappling gun to basically explore faster then most of the games mounts without any farming for passives or stats.
There are not nearly enough enemy camps, dungeon variety and generally stuff to do in the world.
Its still in EA so I am optimistic that this will get addressed.
