I dont think its possible to beat this Oil Rig. Maybe you can later Story like disable the Laser Turrets but even then the NPCs maybe its MP only for the reason that a Player alone with his Pals is dead on sight.
The new Island on the other Hand is reachable and in a different place.
at first the idea of swimming sounded ridicilous cause you will run out of stamina but then i figured out a neat trick, when you summon a flying mount in water, mount it ,then immediatly dismount, you will regen your stamina and the laser turret will most likely miss you (4 out of 5 times for me)
thought yeah you are right, the enemies are definitly tough ,they can kill a jet dragon in mere seconds.
oh and to answer your last point, i emptied my inventory besides a few stones before attempting and the bag dropped on the oil rig after i died.
then it didn't helped much because the npcs from the oil rig are massively buffed up, like they're doing about 800 damage per shot on my jormuntide
Though I have a question: Do human mooks still use guns if submerged in water?
The gatling gunners are basically guaranteed death if you're ever caught without cover though, don't underestimate them. The regular guys can be dangerous but any sufficiently powerful weapon can stun them out of their attacks.
