Help me understand the map.

So I just started flying. Gamechanger for sure. I thought I could kind of see on the early part of the map that you could go northeast and southwest and stay east of the river and everything was similarly leveled. The easy area. Going across the river leveled enemies up to the 30's suddenly. I figured that flying past that would bring another increase in the next ring, but I ended up back in level four creatures instead? How can I tell where levels are roughly on the map reliably?

Perfect. I guess I just happened to fly from the 40+ by the volcano into that small area that is in the northwest back in the easy range again first. Thanks.
