Help with first time saddles and flying
Just looking for some general help. I haven't built any saddles yet. Level 26. Just wandered into a volcano land where it appears I need some heat shielded armor. Everything there was white cliffs and I needed a flying mount to get up to many of the peaks to grab eggs etc. (although I was still able to grab a boat load of eggs, including a rare huge dragon egg I'm excited to cook). Thanks for any flying mount (or any mount) hints for a first timer.

beakon, ragnahawk (I think), vanwyrm, nitewing are the ones I know of. I think Nitewing is the earliest, but not as fast as the others. I used it until i got a beakon and then switched that out for a swift vanwyrm.

Nitewing is like trying to use a bicycle in a car race...oddly enough one of the early game mounts you can get (though not as early as nitewing, so it has that going for it) is Quivern. Another one is Suzaku which is rather easy to breed. either one of those will be good to get you to the next tier of mount. Since you're at the Volcano, that has Ragnahawk which is most people's pal of choice before legendaries, but from a purely stamina/flying perspective, the suzaku will serve you better for long flights around the world and egg hunting. Not as fast as Ragnahawk, but won't have to rest nearly as often. With Suzaku, you can also get to a sanctuary and pick up a Shadowbeak or Faleris which kinda has to tide you over until max level, which is the only point you can get a saddle for Jetdragon which is hands down the fastest mount and...well jets around.

Huh, looking at this myself apparently I mis-remembered some of the level requirements for some of my recommendations. For some reason I really thought Quivern was in the 20's part the technology tree, and I didn't think suzaku was in the 40's...so with that information I guess ragnahawk is the way to go since its both good and comparatively low leveled. It's stamina is just junk though

So do I keep them on my team of five then? Throw them out and climb on? I assume I research their saddle and there must be some way to equip it? Haven't figured out how to equip firearms to my pals yet. Similar process?

Thanks.

I went from Nitewing, to Vanwyrm, to Ragnahawk, to currently Suzaku Aqua. Just pick the one you like. Once you get flying, more options will be available to you. Better mounts will give you better stamina consumption which lets you go farther.

In my opinion, yes, you should keep a flying mount in your Palteam. It is also helpful if you keep a Ground Expedition mount on your team as well to help make dungeon crawling faster. If you don't do dungeons, well, then I guess you don't need to worry about that!

A link someone posted earlier tells you pretty much all you need to know about the various speeds of mounts. However, the only Hybrid mount I've found is a level 50 Legendary with its saddle unlock at Level 48.

"But if two of my five slots are for mounts, that limits combat options!" Not exactly, because you can just type-cast your mount and build your team around it/them. Also, it seems like almost any Pal can learn any skill fruit, so my best bet so far has been to just load up an Anubis with any and every skill I can. (Except the self-destruct moves. Those are the worst.)

EDIT: OH! And equipping weapons on your pals is, indeed, like to a saddle. You craft an items, it unlocks a firearm, you bring that Pal out, and then you use the Pal to fire the weapon. Select Pals have weapon potential. (Foxparks turns *itself* into a flamethrower, Lifmunk gets an SMG, Tanzee gets an Assault Rifle, etc.)

You have to have them on the team. You put them out and if you made a saddle for them, you will see the "mount" option. As far as guns and stuff goes, only the pals in the tree that say they have that feature can do it, and you don't have to build them anything special beyond whatever the item itself is. After that, you just send them out and the game will tell you what to press in order to use it
Okay, so if I have a saddle for a vanwyrm, and I throw it out to fight, does it still fight? Or does it function differently with a saddle on it?

Once you hop off, its a normal Pal in combat. Not like Glider Pals.
Works same as other Mounts for land/sea/air.
Oh my gosh! Gamechanger! Like...argy in Ark gamechanger! I don't know if it's natural progression, but again, I was walking over in the white cliffs by the volcano, and couldn't get to all of the loot up on spires. Just took my first air mount over there and I can't believe how different the map is. I can get over mountain ridges now! I came back with 14 eggs. I grabbed about as many effigies. I should have gotten one of these as soon as I could. Now I need to try the water and land mounts I suppose. Wow!

Ah...you might want to temper your expectations on the water mounts...
if you breed a swift bird and a runner bird, its going to be so much faster

i suggest going for a vanwyrm even thou its some of the slower birds but its fairly common.

go for beakon breed if you dont mind checking breeding list but that might skew your views on wild pals being hard to catch and generally worst.
