Neither grow on farms. Nail ingredients can be mined. Pizza ingredients can be grown and produced by livestock. You need to be what, level 40+ to research an oven to make pizza. So:

I think that answers the above kwestchion, actually. Traits are locked at the 'levels' (more like values) that the developers ascribed to them. They no changee.
If you don't like taking the time to feed your pals manually, unlock the feed bags in the ancient tech section of the tech tree. Both player and pals will automatically eat from any food placed int he food slots that open up on acquiring the feed bag.
