Have you used any of the pal save file 'check' utility online to see if you have corrupt data in your save?

The json save file format is full of 'old' data which is not in game anymore but still in the save file, this can also cause the file to grow large and cause other issues.
Once the save file gets to around 60 megs (compressed) due to lots and lots of orphan data (saved containers data when the container is not longer in the world) it will start crashing.
Lets hope they fix the save file data soon
