Couple questions about Pal beds.
There's a few things I've wondered about Pal beds in general, aside from probably the amount of SAN they recover does matching the size of your Pal matter for their beds? For example the fluffy Pal beds seem like a perfect middle ground between the straw and large ones. However the game text for the larger beds suggest that they're great for larger Pals. However unless you replace all your beds with the larger ones giant Pals might not be able to even use them thanks to other smaller Pals taking the beds. To that point is there even a reason to use them as if they can't reach a bed (And even if they can sometimes they just don't.) they just fall asleep on the ground. I imagine having beds still helps even if they don't use them but I could be wrong.

Another thing is seeing how nocturnal Pals really never sleep do they even require a bed in your base? I thought about setting up a mining base strictly comprised of nocturnal Pals and was even debating if I needed to build beds for them if they'll just never use them.

I haven't tried this yet, but i have fairly large pals (mammorest boss,) and i gave them just the straw beds and they don't have any SAN problem, so i think it just affects their SAN regen while sleeping. I.E. if you want to overwork your pals, make sure you are building better beds and maybe hot springs to account for that SAN loss.

to answer your question, I think they might code it so that large pals do not restore SAN or even lose it upon sleeping in a bed that is too small, but as it stands larger pals do not have a penalty for using smaller beds, as far as i can tell at least.
I don't think the pals actually have to sleep in the bed. You just need to have the right number of them. As far as the beds having an actual effect on the game, I can't tell for sure. So beyond having beds, for me it seems more of a cosmetic choice. Maybe with more difficult settings, the type of beds becomes more important but I wouldn't know. :stein:

I hope this is not the case, as until we can manually assign priority to beds you're just going to be penalized because of a smaller Pal deciding to steal their bed.
In one of my bases I built all large pal beds regardless of pal size, and even then, depending on the distance they are from them when it turns to night, the large pals occasionally just sleep on the floor. From what I've observed, it doesn't matter at that point, only that higher quality beds restore SAN faster. My other bases with a mix of bed sizes, I have not noticed SAN issues from beds. Indeed, I've even had some larger pals sleep on the smaller beds with no issue, though I don't know if that is some form of bug or not.

Regardless, in my playtime I have not had issues maintaining SAN with regards to beds, though if you alter the day/night cycle (which I haven't, it is on a 1/1) then it will be far more impactful, as less time to sleep, less SAN recovered, especially from straw beds.
I am fairly certain that you are not therefore penalized if a bed is "stolen" only that there are enough beds for all pals to begin with. I hope this helps and let me know if you do notice to the contrary!

Only times I've had issues with sanity is if a Pal gets stuck somewhere and I haven't noticed, or with some Pals that focus on a single task like electricity or logging, Some reason the AI just bugs out and they'll keep on working until they start to slack off or get upset. I've got three hot springs in my base just for that reason but they sometimes just refuse to use them. But I've never had issues with the beds even if they cannot access them. My days and nights are slightly longer. (0.8 instead of 1.)
