Do you ever get armor that negates the heat from mount obsidian? I have the heat res metal armor and I'm on a valwyrm but I can only go to the very edge before the temp goes up and I die quickly

Yes. Better Resistant armors have higher level Temperature Resistance. You can also get Undershirts that can increase this as well.

Doesnt work on lava. I have refined heat resi with undershirt and lava still ruins your day

Valwyrm is actually LOWERING your heat resistance. Or rather, he is making it hotter. Get a non fire based flyer, while riding valwyrm you need one more heat resistance.

I find that rank two hot weather resistance is all I need for Mount Obsidian. It won't stop lava, but otherwise I'm good.

put your vanwyrm into a breeding pen with a foxcicle and get a van-cryst, basically a flying freezer. and yeah dont ride fire pals in heat zones, or ice pals in snow zones or you'll have a bad time. I usually have no issues running around obsidian in cold resist pal armor and a +2 heat resist shirt, even while fighting jet. temperature stacks now as well so if you're hit with a flame attack while at the edge of your heat resistance, you'll cook for a bit, I tend to keep an additional basic heat resist shirt handy (can buy one of those at the fishing village south of the mountain on the beach) in case I get in a predicament with some incinerams or something.

You can buying Heat Resistant Undershirt in Duneshelter town (center of desert map) or South part of Mount Obsidiant at 1000$ per each. Can stack if you wearing 2 at same time (Normal+Green / Blue 1 get full stack).
Dungeons also drop but rare.

South part of Mount Obsidiant not trouble to reach, there no heat on beach road.
2 stack heat resistant are enough to explore Mount Obsidiant just don't bring your fire pal at during day unless you get full stack of heat resistant.

To get around I use a Helzypher and a Kitsun while wearing Heat-resistant Pal Metal Armour and Thermal Shirt+2. I pretty much never have issues with temperature due to this (also, my main base is at the foot of the volcano).
