Pretty sure I did see someone using a first-person mod out there somewhere, though I agree I'd like to see it as part of the game itself. It would make certain aspects so much more immersive (raiding the oil rig in first-person, no cheating by being able to peek around corners without danger, that would be intense!).
Granted, some of the rideable pals are so big that you wouldn't be able to see very well in first-person, but hey, that's why being able to switch between views is handy. Or they could make large pals turn transparent like they do in-base when you're too close.
