Your Pals will still be of a certain element though and thus vulnerable to its counter.
That´s how understand it. What I do fail to understand is those Pals with dual elements, there are quite a few, they seem at a huge disadvantage since they can be countered by two types of Pals.
I only see grey numbers when I have a fire pal with fire attacks on the wrong type of pal, so try to stick with the right combo. A fire pal with water attacks will do better against another fire Pal than if he is using his own abilities.
