Mining efficiency

So I noticed that with a Refined metal Pickax it shreds through mining at ludicrousness speeds but has ♥♥♥♥ for durability where (this is the stupid part) the sword Not as fast but has a ♥♥♥♥ ton of durability. I've mined more with my sword than with my pickax so can someone explain how 330 damage but few mining verse 280 and a ♥♥♥♥ ton of mining is better?

By the time you even HAVE a sword, just nuke the ore cluster with a astegon.....
I don't even know why you are comparing a relatively low level refined pickaxe to the sword all the way near the end of the tech tree and that's your answer why people are using the refined pickaxe.

Put a box next to the rock pile so you can unload it and dismantle it, then rebuild when you need to.

It's slightly inconvenient but it works when you need them to work on other things.

Still, it's annoying. Why isn't there an infinite Iron resource like wood and stone? I get not having one for Pal stone, since you can just pulverise rocks with a water Pal to get them. Iron on the other hand is used for pretty much everything early mid game onwards, yet there's no proper way to get Pals to mine it outside of specific areas of the game! That's of course if you build one WITHOUT the rock mine/rocks distracting them.

While Yes I could use my digtoise I find that I like to speed up the process by participating which I noticed that the stone pickax and the refined pickax both have roughly the same durability which makes me question how the hell do they have the same durability but the efficiency of digging is better. While the sword is slightly better than metal pickax it has way more durability than any of the pickaxes.
