I have not hit a tree or a rock or anything since I got pals to do that for me.. I mean I guess your claim is valid but I'd just never know because I use my dudes to do all my work for me.
Could turn it into the "Pickaxe Axe" from Terraria. Or add something like that.
------
I have not made/used the sword but by your own description... it's a simple matter of durability... no?
You must feel just as pained as I do when you see someone complain the base and crafting is such a grind.
Put a box next to the rock pile so you can unload it and dismantle it, then rebuild when you need to.
It's slightly inconvenient but it works when you need them to work on other things.
by that point i already have those ghost cats that mine, and am working on getting digtoise, and if he's broken i use the mudskipper to mine with and a few crafters to do whatever stuff i have queued up.
so i just basically just go around raiding and collecting the stuff that only drops from combat, capturing rare pals and when i go back to the bases i just shift resources around a little and manufacture stuff, and the pals make it.
i think the pickaxe stats can use some changing if what you say is true, but i think the devs want you to use the tamed monsters instead.
I mine quartz by hand as circuit boards are rarely needed after firs equipment is done
Just saying, but you should try doing some work for yourself. Since I found attack to be kinda useless and I feel like being an HP sponge is kinda boring, I put some stats into work. You can literally work as fast as anubis (maybe faster if you go all in?) and be way more efficient with your work than your automated pals will ever be. Yeah, it cuts into exploration time, but taking part of one in-game day to just obliterate all the resources and organize them to your own preference is great. The fact I've turned it into give-my-pals-a-day-off deal means I just toss them in the box and their san heals better than anything food does. The only down side is the few tasks you can't actually do. For the most part though, taking 1/2 an in game day (if even that) to do all that you can in a base and letting your pals reset seems to make them way more efficient and I noticed a lot of my "hangups" and "glitching out" pals reduced a lot.
edit: just FYI, I did put a moderate amount of points into work (and weight/HP, so not even fully built around it), I can take down a tree in two swings, destroy a coal node in 6ish swing (I never felt a need to count, the tree thing is just very noticeable). The biggest issue I have is I sometimes can't stop my swing/animation before I bounce myself over my weight capacity
